Russia is rolling out a highly modernized version of the Tu-95 bomber.
The new Tu-95MSM variant comes packed with upgraded weapons, advanced electronics,
and modified engines, all designed with lessons learned from the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
The bomber has already completed several flight tests, including one on January 16th last year.
According to the United Aircraft Corporation, the plane passed all the required benchmarks,
and its enhanced systems were thoroughly assessed.
Now, the Tu-95MSM is set to take flight across Ukraine.
Let's break down what these upgrades mean, and why they matter.
The original Tu-95 first took to the skies in the 1950s,
built to deliver gravity bombs during the Cold War.
By the 1980s, newer variants were adapted to launch cruise missiles,
giving it a whole new way to strike from long distances.
Now, the Tu-95MSM takes things even further with major upgrades in engines, avionics, and weaponry.
One of the most significant upgrades in the Tu-95MSM is the introduction of the
NK-12MPM turboprop engine, the most powerful production engine of its kind in the world.
This change is more than just a boost in power.
It improves the aircraft's overall efficiency,
allowing it to fly longer distances without using more fuel.
When paired with newly reinforced propellers,
these engines increase the bomber's thrust-to-weight ratio,
giving it the ability to fly faster and higher than before.
The result is a bomber that can cover vast stretches of airspace,
making it a key player in long-range strike operations,
where distance can be the difference between success and survival.
With the new engines providing extra power,
the Tu-95MSM can now carry a heavier and more diverse weapons payload.
The aircraft can launch some of Russia's most advanced cruise missiles,
like the Kh-101 and Kh-102, both of which have ranges well over 5,000 kilometers.
These long-range missiles allow the Tu-95MSM to strike high-value targets
without coming close to enemy defenses, keeping it safe from interception.
The Kh-101, in particular, is designed to evade modern air defense systems.
Its low-flying, high-speed approach, along with sophisticated countermeasures,
makes it one of the most difficult missiles to stop.
In fact, it has been reported that the Kh-101 can even deploy decoys to confuse enemy radar,
a feature that has been tested in real-world conflicts like the ongoing war in Ukraine.
In early January 2023, Ukraine claimed to have recovered a largely intact Kh-101 missile,
confirming the missile's use of this decoy capability.
In a grainy video, the missile was shown releasing a mix of chaff and flares,
confirming its ability to deceive radar.
But the Tu-95MSM is not just about new tech.
It also retains older, yet still formidable, weapons.
The Kh-22 anti-ship missile, for example, remains a threat with its incredible speed
and unpredictable flight path, adding another layer of power to the aircraft's arsenal.
The older Tu-95MS variant was previously capable of carrying up to four Kh-101 or Kh-102 missiles.
But with its recent upgrade, the Tu-95MSM now boasts a significantly increased missile payload.
To make room for this, the airframe has been fortified, especially its wings.
The Tu-95MSM can now carry two additional missiles under each wing,
bringing the total to eight.
This boost in capacity is mainly due to the larger size of the Kh-101 and Kh-102 missiles,
which no longer fit on the internal rotary launcher of the Tu-95MS.
To solve this, the Tu-95MSM now has four new external pylons.
This upgrade increases the bomber's firepower without sacrificing its overall performance.
The upgrades to the Tu-95MSM go far beyond just its weapons.
Its avionics have been completely revamped with innovative radar,
navigation, and communication systems.
These updates make the bomber much more precise and allow the crew to access real-time data,
helping them make quick, well-informed decisions during missions.
Plus, the Tu-95MSM is now seamlessly connected to a larger network of forces,
making it easier to coordinate with air, sea, and ground units.
When it comes to self-defense, the Tu-95MSM is better prepared than ever.
It is equipped with advanced electronic warfare systems
that help it evade enemy countermeasures and air defenses,
giving it a better chance of surviving in hostile airspace.
According to report, the upgraded Tu-95MSM also features the Novella HB 1.021 Phased Array Radar,
a modern flight control and information display system,
and the Meteor-N M2 defense complex.
The Meteor system is particularly impressive,
capable of jamming radars both on the ground and in the air.
Together, these upgrades ensure the Tu-95MSM
is a powerful and resilient asset in modern warfare.
Russia has leaned heavily on its Tu-95MS strategic bombers
for large-scale missile strikes on Ukraine.
Back in 2021, Russia's Tu-95MS fleet stood at around 60 aircraft,
according to the Military Balance 2022.
These bombers are based at Engels Air Base with the 184th Heavy Bomber Regiment
and at Ukrainka Air Base in the Amur region with the 79th and 182nd Guards Aviation Regiments.
But Ukraine's forces haven't made it easy for Russia to maintain that fleet.
In one of the biggest drone attacks to date, Ukrainian strikes on April 4th
hit at least four Russian air bases.
Three Tu-95MS bombers were heavily damaged at Engels Air Base,
along with two Su-25 jets at Yaisk Air Base.
These attacks have likely cut Russia's Tu-95 fleet by about 5%,
according to the Institute for the Study of War.
Learning from its setbacks in Ukraine,
Russia has focused on consistent modernization,
with the Tu-95MSM upgrades being a key example.
In the ongoing conflict, these bombers provide a distinct edge,
capable of launching long-range, precision-guided cruise missiles
to strike Ukrainian infrastructure, military positions, and supply routes.
The improved avionics make these missions more efficient,
increasing accuracy while reducing collateral damage.
For Ukraine, the presence of the Tu-95MSM is not just a tactical challenge,
but a psychological one, as it symbolizes Russia's ability
to deliver powerful strikes across vast distances,
keeping the pressure on Ukrainian defenses.
Well, that's all for today.
Thanks for watching.
