‘In the fourth piece, the art of mere suggestion, of suppressed passion, celebrates true triumphs. Everything is limited to delicate suspensions in the bass that point upwards, and gently falling gestures in the upper voice that respond to them. Nothing is expressed, everything is merely hinted at. The fifth piece, Andante con grazia ed intimissimo sentimento, seems like a painfully twitching, restrained dance in E minor. The six-eight time signature is dissolved here into nothing but syncopations and hemiolas, the harmony into constant suspensions, the melody into a single hesitation and faltering. No. 6 is an even more delicate Andantino, whose gentle E major melody is so overlaid with suspensions and anticipations that one is reminded of the piano music of the early Schoenberg.
