This Will Improve Your Backwards Roller Skating - Swirls

How to Roller Skate

Let's improve your backwards skating by doing the swirl. Once you've locked in your backward
fundamentals and you're bubbling, you might not feel quite ready to lift your feet off the floor
yet. So this move is going to help you gain a lot more confidence backwards but still with two feet
firmly on the ground. So the first stage is a backwards bubble and then stagger. Backwards
bubble and if you can, opposite stagger. What we need to build up to here is changing of the
staggers backwards like this. Weight on here, swap, weight on the left one. Once you're confident with
swapping your feet in the stagger, we're going to add some edges. So the foot at the front is going
to do the outside on the little toe and the foot at the back is going to do the inside on the big
toe. So just think about leaning and then swap your stagger and lean again. Now if you find yourself
losing momentum between staggers, you can always pop a little bubble in.
Bubble, bubble. Just feel those edges and then we'll add the next bit. So the idea is to get
these one after the other. Stagger change, stagger change. But you're going to quickly lose momentum
if you've not got your bubbles in between. So let me show you how to make momentum with this move.
To get this momentum, we're going back to bubbles. So I did a video called perfect bubbles a little
while ago and I will link that for you because I talked about getting momentum from that inside
edge and that's what we're going to do backwards. So when you think about your bubble, you get the
power from this inside, inside, inside. That's the power. So we're going to use that same power
backwards. So when I push here and do my outside, I'm going to power that inside, power that inside.
If you're having trouble with this, think about your shoulders. So I'm going to power
twisting each time. Once you've got that, let's do the next bit. So far we've been getting our edges.
So we stagger, we change edges and now we're adding the pull to get our momentum. But there's
a sneaky little step in this one as well. So my front foot, back wheels are going to swivel to
get onto that outside edge quicker because we need to do quick movements, not long lingering edges.
I'm hitting my stagger and I'm leaning, then I hit my stagger and I'm leaning.
The difference is if I hit my stagger and then I switch my heel, hit my stagger, switch my heel,
hit my stagger, switch my heel. This gets my feet more in parallel and gets the front foot onto the
outside edge a lot quicker. And once you put all of it together, you've got the move. Once you're
really comfortable with that, you can add a 180 flourish. So think of this as three steps. So we've
got one, two, and on the surge you're going to go round. One, two, three. One, two, three.
So the 180, the back foot is going to pull you round. The back is my leading foot. This is pulling
me round in the circle. And the one at the front is just there for the ride. Let me show you one
more time. Lead, lead, lead. Now pulling this into a tighter inside edge is going to keep it a nice
tight circle. If you're having trouble, don't forget your shoulders. Shoulder. Bear with it,
it's not easy. This 180 is really similar to a dip. So if you can already do a dip, you're going
to find this a lot easier. And if you haven't learned one yet, you're already halfway there.
I'm Katie, you've been watching Skatie, and I'll see you next time. Bye!
