Former President George W. Bush joins TODAY’s Kathie Lee Gifford and his daughter, Jenna Bush Hager, to answer some rapid-fire questions that cover his most embarrassing, moving and funny family stories (including that whole choking on a pretzel in the White House thing), and he shares the hardest and most uplifting experiences he had as president.
This is the first one okay, do you watch Jen on the show
every day, no.
You do watch me some.
We should have said every day. Do you watch occasionally and
do it you get embarrassed by my behavior, no, I'm very proud
has she ever said something you went, I'm going to get that
girl and I'm going to know now that all happened when she was
a teenager.
In my 20's if you remember when I yeah, yeah, yeah, that was my
we've got to rush it for a fake.
Did you.
And perfect Barbara did not she did to remember we're on the
cover of people magazine hopes they did it again okay, that
was bad. He knows that was Britney Spears, I'm glad to
bring this back what's one thing you took as a souvenir
from the White House, although it's illegal.
I don't think you hide anything at the White House now that I
left a letter for the president which is a lovely thing and I
put it and it's a tradition, so I didn't invent it. Yeah and
bill Clinton left one for me and that left one for bill
Clinton yeah, and on and on I think that's a beautiful you
leave any pretzels do you know you know that his favorite snack
was pretzels anyone can choke. I passed. Was it a big.
Every day you would go in and mindlessly press open one day
and too many in his mouth. I just hit the deck.
I did you hide, okay, what's one thing you did in the White
House that nobody know.
Interesting question smoke cigars.
By the way, yes last night when he was watching you would have
been last night we had over for dinner and there were just a
little cigar chewing left all over. Sometimes you want to
cigar. Yeah, and it was like Hansel and Gretel.
What's your favorite room in the White House.
Favorite room and the wise spent most of the time of the
other one I was sleeping in the treaty were treating favorite
oval office memory, I know this one.
It is what is it maybe with gaps when you. Yeah, thanks for
jogging my memory. I know everything in between the
parade and the inaugural balls which were exhausting by the
way. My dad came and I went over to see the old fellow see
what it felt like is
sworn in president and walked in.
And I said welcome Mister president he said thank you
Mister president. Yeah, very sweet. What was the hardest
moment. I would I would think as an onlooker that it was 9
but no, yeah, I mean that 9.11 was hard. I think it was it was
the
you know when when some of our troops lost their lives and
that was hard.
On the other hand a lot of the families really went out of the
way to boost my spirits, you know.
Yeah, they really did it so it's remarkable 9.11 was hard
but it was so
there's a fog of war. You know, I wasn't sure what's going on
nobody was and it took a while for that fog to kind of settle
out.
I pretty much made up my mind we're going to protect the
country and within the law and went after him.
You sure did not and we're so divided as a nation now which
everybody knows yeah. What would you do. Well, we're
pretty divided when I was president after a while we were
united right after 9.11 the enemy did a good job of bringing
people bringing us together and then
you know, and for a long time we were united and then it you
know that some of the action overseas got tough and people
that were supportive start bailing out for example of
their support and then it became very political and some
of this will burn out. But it's it requires all of us
understanding how the other person thinks.
So for example,
I understand beginning to understand how Jenna thanks.
Yeah, a lot a lot of this is all generation to their kids
today never remembered Vietnam never remember.
Yeah, you know it's interesting you said that because
the period when you and I were much younger was very divided.
Oh I remember the 60's and the 60's were horrendous and much
worse than today.
Yeah, when when he talks to Barbara and me who we are
worried about some of the way that our country is going he
always reassures us. Yeah, I mean after September 11th my
parents always put Barbara and me first and I think that took
a lot of.
So for example, when the Secret Service start following Jenna
in college, I was relieved.
He's the best grandpa you've ever seen have paid last night
Milan puppy just waited by the door they got so excited to see
their hands. Well, it's the best may I speak for America
and say thank you as you're saying thank you for the
service of these these great American here is.
Mister president we want to thank you for your service and
thank you for the circle all right. Right after this you
could stay home.
Thank you all.
