M2 Heavy Machine Gun, firing the .50 caliber BMG, short for Big Ass Machine Gun,
designed by the blessed John Moses Browning. This American classic has helped GIs put fights
out in World War II, over in Europe, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan.
Wait, wait, FN Herstal? What?
After Browning's initial prototype, two million of these bad boys have been made.
Since then, the U.S. military has mounted these on aircrafts, water vessels, and ground vehicles.
Oh yeah.
The M2 .50 caliber.
I wasn't a grunt, so I mean, I don't have any memories
really running the M2 hard on deployment, but I remember this one time when we were
in garrison and the battalion commander wanted us to do these platoon sergeant and platoon leader.
Basically, platoon level officer and NCO competitions and pit all of the platoons
together or against each other like the Hunger Games. My platoon sergeant had a fractured hip
from his MRAP flipping over in Iraq, so he wasn't going to be able to keep up with the
platoon sergeants, but he was a damn fine NCO.
I remembered as we came through the motor pool after a really long
ruck run, and we were all with M4s and M16s, we threw on the Japanese headbands
and ran yelling at the top of our lungs to the M2 that we had to carry across the finish line,
and then one of us had to carry the other person as a buddy run back over, and that would be done.
I remembered distinctly we were carrying the M2 and we broke the barrel down
off of the main gun with a tripod. That barrel with a tripod, there's some weight to it, so
I didn't realize how heavy it was until after I did all that and I almost dropped the barrel,
but I did not, but because of the headgear we got into a lot of trouble with the sergeant major.
M16, still on I-1, one pack, green, green, over.
50 South, 1-6, roger, over.
1-6, still I-2, one victor, two packs, recon 1, over.
