Demi Lovato is making their directorial debut with the documentary “Child Star,” a documentary featuring the stories of many Hollywood icons who got their start in the industry as children. At the premiere of the film, which she co-directed with Nicola Marsh, Demi told Access Hollywood what it was like to tell such an important story as a first directing project. The singer and performer also gushed over interviewing Drew Barrymore for the documentary and shared what they learned from her. Plus, Demi shed light on how she feels about the possibility of future children wanting to take part in the industry. "It's not something that I would push on my kids by any means," they shared. "If anything, I want to protect them from social media and being in front of the public eye as much as I can, and then when they’re of age to follow their dreams. I want to support them as much as possible. I think the way that I would be supporting them is by protecting them from being in the public eye too soon. And so, when I think about having kids, I think about telling them, ‘You can perfect your craft and practice and get as great as you possibly can at it, and then when you turn 18, then you can follow your dreams. But I think having those years of just like sacred childhood is really important to every kid." "Child Star" debuts on Hulu on Sept. 17.
Congrats on your directorial debut. I mean, yeah, I mean it's huge for any movie
But how does it feel to direct on something that's so meaningful to you?
it feels
amazing to be able to say that I've
Directed a film period like I have always dreamt of directing and just never thought it would be
Possible and now it is and then on top of that
I'm co-directing a story that is really important to me and telling the stories of
People who some of which I already knew and already, you know respect
But then others who I just respected in general, so it's it's a meaningful topic to me
I want to talk about your interviews with Drew Barrymore
They were so moving because she's been in this industry for so long
I mean she had so much wisdom to say she was empowering with her words
Was there anything that was surprising to you about her revelations and her candidness?
Well, her candidness is something that she's been respected for for quite some time, you know
She's always been vulnerable and candid with with her audience and and audiences in general
Like she's just I respect her so much. She's so brave and courageous
And so what I learned from her was how she is continually
deprogramming and reprogramming herself
Which is something that I relate to it really resonated with me because that's what I'm doing now that I'm in my adulthood as well
But you know, I think the toll of being a child star, you know came with
Obstacles that we both faced and to see her come out on the other side is really beautiful
Speaking of coming out on the other side. I mean this experience the shared experience between you all
It's there's definitely a bond, you know, I can imagine the bond that you all have created
Can you talk about that? And what is the bond that you have and share with the other child stars?
Well, you know when you are thrusted into the media at such young age
It comes with a lot of pressures and the pressures that we've all experienced, you know
kind of there's this common ground with all of us so we relate to one another and
It's been so great to have that community and to be able to talk openly with the other participants of the film who?
relate to my story to
For my last question
I do want to say that this spoke to me because I'm in a chapter of my life where I'm like, you know
Thinking about family and kids and I just think about you know, as much as I love this industry
Could I you know put my kids on that path to child's like child stardom?
Have you thought about that with your future family? Yeah, definitely
You know, it's it's not something that I would push on my kids by any means
If anything I want to protect them from social media and being in front of the public eye as much as I can
and then when they're of age to
Follow their dreams, you know, I
Want to support them as much as possible
I think the way that I would be supporting them is by protecting them from being in the public eye too soon
And so when I think about having kids I think about you know, I think about
Telling them you can perfect your craft and
Practice and get as great as you possibly can at it
And then when you turn 18, then you can follow your dreams
But I think having those years of just like sacred childhood is really important to every every kid
We're so proud of you. So congrats again
