INCREDIBLE BOXING

Right, Aki Karim here for Boxing Now, formerly known as BBTV. I'm here with the white rhino,
David Allen, aka the Doncaster Delahoyer. Do you prefer Dave or David? Because your close
circle call you David.
Yeah, I mean, I prefer David. But really, he can't be anything really, within reason.
I've had some good nicknames in the past. What was the pay-per-view one you had?
Papi pay-per-view. I've had a few really. These days, call me whatever you want really,
as long as it's not too horrible.
Well, we were just having a chat, a little brief chat off camera about the stressful
world of being a parent. And it can be very stressful. But Betty's just had a birthday,
right?
Yeah, she was two on Sunday, yes. But she's like two, like she's, yeah.
Well, it's great. It's a great milestone, obviously. It's a happy day. But then at the
same time, it's hard work. But how does the fact that she's two now make you feel? Because
it feels to me like it just flowed by pretty quickly.
Yeah, it's mad really. Time's going so fast. But yeah, it's just changed me immeasurably
I never loved anything really, you know what I mean? I like food, and I thought I loved
food. I thought I loved lots of things. But God, them kids just, you know what I mean?
She's doing my head in today. When I got in the photo, she was sweating like mad, wasn't
I? She's had me running around the house and that. But she's just like a dad, you know
what I mean? She's just a nightmare.
Oh, you were asking me if it gets easier, Dave. I've got two girls. Obviously, I know
you've got a boy and a girl. But girls, it gets easier at about six. So you've got four
years left.
Yeah, I don't want to wish my life away. But I don't have much hair left soon. Do you
know what I mean? My little lad's perfect. He's quiet. He just sits there. And she's
just like, oh. I can hear her now in the bath. She's just, oh, I don't know. The best thing
that's ever happened to me, bought. But I can't wait for her to come to the grandmas
at some point next month.
You know that Rocky ad, catching the chickens? You've had to catch the betty, haven't you?
Do you know what it is? I took her out earlier. She's got a scooter. I don't know why my
mum bought her a scooter. She's just turned two. She's not got a clue. She was ragging
all over, chucking it in the edge. And I thought, in the nettles and that, I felt like
putting her in there, ankles first, and you pull it out. Do you know what I mean? I would
have been frowned upon, I feel, by the passing members of the public.
Yeah, you'd be cancelled, Dave.
Yeah, maybe, yeah. I just got a nettle myself, and she just laughed and did it around six
times. So yeah, we're good, that.
Yeah, you've said that having children has changed your life. Now, obviously, there's
the obvious, about it gives you something to fight for, the obvious stuff. But is there
anything else that really stands out to you?
It just settles you down, don't it? It's just, they're what's important now. Before,
all the things were important. It's like, the obvious things, you just can't really
do that anymore now, because, do you know what I'm saying?
Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know exactly what you're saying.
You know what I mean? Obviously, yeah, loads of things, like even-
You don't want to say?
No, I'm trying to, I've lost weight, and keeping weight, I want to be healthy for
him. Even things like, I have to, when you're a dad, though, you have to be a good partner
as well. You have to, there's loads of things involved in it, so it's taken for the better,
really. It's calmed me right down, and yeah, I think anyone that knew me a few years ago
knows me now, the change is just mad, really.
You know, doing that little documentary we did for your fight night, it was really
interesting to see the people you have around you, because it varies from fighters to
fighters, not slating anyone, but the way your team, it's kind of like a family. It's
a really nice little unit you've got there, isn't it?
Yeah, obviously, it's got just the three lads that I train. I've known Liam for five
years, I've lived with him for three and a half. I've just met him, just met him outside
some bloody, anyway, I met him, and just, like my son, I just took him on, and moved
him in, and sorted him out, and turned his life around, and the other two boys, I've
three and a half year, and two and a half year, and just, yeah, I see him every day,
I see Joe like six hours a day, I used to live with him, I see Calvin every day for
hours, and you develop like a mad, it's like a family, like brothers, you know, we're
like brothers, it's like a father-son relationship, because as a coach, you're like a
father-son, like a therapist, you're always going to go into one, and to be honest,
sometimes they're like my therapist, you know what I mean, like my big brother figure,
because sometimes, you know, I need help as well, you know, sometimes, so it's really
nice, you know, there's no hangers on, I don't have many friends, so yeah, I enjoy, I
really enjoy fighting, I enjoy it for them, because they really enjoy it as well, you
know, it's nice that, because when I started training them, I've not really had many
fights last couple of years, so they do enjoy coming to watch me, the pressure's not on
them, and they can enjoy me doing my thing, so it's good.
Yeah, yeah, and also, we're going to come and talk about your own YouTube channel in
a second, actually, but that gives you the chance to shed light on them whenever you
need to, and on that topic, you've actually just, tell us about, because I'm speaking
to Joe Howarth tomorrow, we're doing an interview, you've signed this fight, now you
told me about him a while ago, well, we both said on an interview, we were talking about
Joe, how good he is, that you'd like to fight Hashim Rayman, because we love that
fight, but you've now signed him, how has this come about, and you must be excited
about this, because I know he's a kid you rated from day one.
Yeah, I went out on Sunday, we waited for a birthday at this trampoline place, and
I just got a text off Joe, saying, can you give me a ring, and you know what I mean,
I'm like, I'm mates with Joe, he's not someone, I met him a few times, I came to
support Joe, I watched him fight, nice kid, just texted me out the phone, I thought,
bloody hell, I thought I wouldn't see one, so I've rung him and said, look, my
management contract's up with my manager, would you manage me?
And at first, I was like, because you know what it is, it's a case of, I don't, I'm
not like the manager, I'm not massively in love with it, because it's business, it's
not sport, do you know what I mean, like, the boxing is a sport, it's what I love,
but I just thought, you know what, this is too good an opportunity to pass up, because
I really think he'd be one of the most exciting fighters in the country in a couple
of years, I really believe that, you know, I think he could go really far as well, so
I met up with him and Lee, Lee Bundle, his coach, who was a really good fighter, about
20 years ago, and I just said, look, I'll do my best for you, I think you're top
notch, so, for as long as I can do good, then great, we'll work together, you know,
so, yeah, I think he's, I think he's got, like, he's got, I think he's got superstar
potential, to be honest.
He's got that old-fashioned throwback style, I think, you know, when I've seen him box,
I really enjoy watching him box.
He's actually out, he's out on a GBM show, right, in September, mid-September?
Yeah, he's on, it's like a, you know what it is, it's like a GBM next-gen.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
I see him on there anyway, and I just, I run the, I run the, like, the promo, and I said,
look, I need this kid on, not really on the show.
I said, mate, mate room, because this kid is shit on.
So, yeah, he's on, and he's going to bring a good crowd from Wigan, get a win, and then
who knows, you know, who knows, hopefully a big promo will pick him up.
All I've got to do is watch him, you know, he's had one defeat, which, at the time, it
takes me, after that fight, I said, look, can you help me get a nutritionist, because
I'm knackered with the weight, I'm not sure I know what I'm doing.
So, he's only 22, like, I just, I really hope, I really hope one of the big promos
picks him up, because he really is, he's like a, he's a rough diamond, honestly.
They're the ones, they're the ones it's all about, the rough diamonds.
It'll be interesting to see what you can do with him, though.
Obviously, he's got a good training, good, but it'll be interesting to see how you can
actually get him navigating, because that would really show what you're like as a manager.
It's a bit of a test, actually.
Yeah, it's like with Joe Hayden, Joe Hayden's, he's going to have had 16 fights in 26 months
shortly.
Yeah, yeah.
Like, young fighters need to be active, like, with Joe, we're going to get him active, he's
going to box twice before the end of the year, you know, he's going to keep doing what he's
doing in the gym, but I want to get him active, that's the key, really, get him active, that's
how you improve, that's how you keep sharp.
That's how we keep him in the gym and keep his weight down, do you know what I mean?
That's the most important with him, really, because he is just a fucking, he's a rough
kid, do you know what I mean?
That's what he is, like, he's a fighter, he's fucking, he's one of them.
You've got to control him, keep him in the gym, and the way to do that is like, look mate,
you're boxing six weeks, right, you've just boxed, but here's your new date, do you know
what I mean?
Yes.
So after September 14th, he's going to turn and get out of the ring, he's won, and I'm
going to go, look mate, you're boxing November, you're boxing December at the latest, so get
back in the gym.
So me as a manager, I'm not a money guy, I'm not a business guy, but I know what it takes
to be successful as a boxer, and more importantly, what it takes to fail.
He has to be active, and that's what I'll do for him, you know, I want to get him boxing
all the time, and hopefully at some point, securing a deal with a TV promoter, because
I really believe he deserves one, and when he gets it, it'll be a life.
People need to go, like, check out the, guys, keep your eyes peeled, because Joao's going
to be on the channel tomorrow, and he's a really good fighter, so we'll be following
that story a lot, we'll let Joe sort of expand on that.
But there's so many topics here, I don't want to keep you too long, so I'm going to bring
on to the next topic now, Dave, which is this show that I've been talking to you about.
I've gone through a lot of different names backstage on this show, but we've actually
decided on just calling it The Dave Allen Show.
But would you prefer The David Allen Show?
I like either, really, I'm happy with either, yeah.
Well, I think The Dave Allen Show's good, because we're doing a little intro and frame,
and you'll see that Dave fits better.
Well, now I do the YouTube thing, if I put a video with my name in the title, Dave Allen,
it gets more views.
Right, well, there you go.
People search, for YouTube search, if I put my name in, it gets more, so if people ever
search for me, they'd put in Dave Allen, they'd never put in David Allen, so Dave Allen would
make more sense.
Yeah, and that's how I, before I knew you, that's how I used to see you.
This show we're talking about here, people, you'll be interested in this, because every
Sunday, or when Dave can make it on Sundays, it might not be every single Sunday, but on
Sundays, we're going to do this show with Dave, where we're going to get viewers' questions,
and Dave's going to answer them, and also, we're going to talk about some interesting
stuff, not just boxing, but I've got a host of interesting stuff, and I might surprise
you with some of it as well, because there might even be surprise guests going to come
on this, okay?
It's going to be good.
And it's an opportunity, because I feel like people love interacting with you on more of
a down-to-earth level, because you do that Q&A, don't you, on your own social media,
and you get a lot of people asking you questions, don't you?
Yeah, I do the Q&A probably once a week, usually before or after a big show.
And over the years, you know when I was, like, when I beat Brown and stuff, it was
like 30,000 people watching my story, you know, and the questions were just, like, I
couldn't even read them all.
These days, no, not so much, but, you know, still, you're still looking at 300, 400 questions
minimum every time, so that, for me, I do it because it's like, that's a nice feeling
that people want to interact, and it's like, I feel like I'm interacting with them.
I don't know, I don't even know who 95% of them are, but it's like, if they want to ask
me a question, you know, it's nice to be able to answer it back if they, like, value my
opinion.
I really enjoy it, so I don't write very often either, so it is nice to, like, that
interaction for me is nice, and I do enjoy doing it, to be honest.
Um, would you, okay, so people who are listening to this interview, I'll just wait until Dave
puts himself back, you've gone, you've gone, there we go.
People who are listening to this interview, send your questions in for David Allen right
now under this YouTube video, and also, this will also be a clip on Instagram, so please
send us your questions, DM your questions, don't put them all there because we want some
to be a surprise, and on Sundays, we're going to ask Dave these questions, and then eventually
it's going to be live, a live interactive show.
We're going to do the first one non-live, and then after that, it'll be live.
I think it'll be great, what's the weirdest question you've ever been asked?
Probably, uh, a few times at boxing shows, I've had loads of fellas asking me if I'll
come and go through the partners after the show.
I picked the wrong time to put my face on this screen, didn't I?
No, no, no, that's, yeah, that, I never really liked that question very much, really, because
I didn't feel like there was ever, like, there's not really an answer to it, you know what
I mean?
That was, that is the winner, though, of the week.
This is why you need to tune into this show, guys, because stuff like this, we'll be, we'll
be asked, so get any questions in.
There will be a moderator who will, but that sort of question, we'll definitely get through,
but there will be a moderator, look, just filtering them out, but what did you, what
did you say to those questions?
What did you, like, reply?
Was there ever a time when-
Well, they would say, like, we're going to go through them in bed after the show, and
I'd be like, because it happened, I reckon, I think four times.
The last time was at Lomachenko Campbell, and she was a bonny woman, really, like, she
was a good-looking woman, do you know what I mean?
But I looked at him, and I thought, I don't perform well in front of crowds, really.
My boxing, you know what I mean, my boxing tells the story, so I just looked at him,
and I just said, I said, I said, no, I can't, mate, I can't, because
I can't do that, I can't, I was stuttering, and I was saying that, and I was like, I said
no to all of them, but, yeah, I just thought, I didn't, I didn't enjoy it, really.
Yeah, fair enough, fair enough, are you, lucky guy.
Your own YouTube channel, I've been watching all, I've been watching all the episodes,
they're great, they're really good.
You're kind of making a mockery of people who make really elaborate content, because
you're just sat there on selfie mode, having a chat, and you're doing good numbers.
We know what's up, man.
Some fella, some fella put, Dave Allen looks like my mates in the Whatsapp group chat after
two days on the session, all dishevelled and all sweaty and that.
I just thought, my YouTube channel, I've had loads of people, yeah, from the boxing world
and others saying, I can do thumbnails, I can do this, I can do that, I'm not interested,
like, all I, I just want to tell my stories,
and I just want to, like, entertain, and that's, that's hope.
I think, the numbers, I've done 300, I've done nearly 300,000 views in, like, three
weeks, you know, that's pretty good numbers for a new channel, I think.
It's really good numbers, yeah, it's good, very good numbers.
And they're going up all the time, and I just, you know what makes me really happy, really,
it's just like, my missus wanted me for years, like, oh, to do YouTube, and I was like, no
one's going to listen to it, and, and now they are, like, I post, I post every day,
apart from weekends, unless there's a show on, so, I've been really enjoying it, really,
the 99% of the feedback, the comments are nice, some of them are arseholes, but that's,
that's, I got used to that many years ago now.
Just remind people who haven't, get over and subscribe to this channel, what, just remind
people what the name is, it's the White Rhino David Allen, right?
I'm not sure, to be honest, I don't know.
I'm pretty sure it is, I think it's the White Rhino David Allen, get over to, to, to the
channel, because there's some really interesting chat, I love the chat you did about the Ingle
gym, I love the chat you did about paid sparring, about the time with Peter Fury, and they're
really interesting topics, really interesting.
Yeah, I've, I've been very fortunate, really, in my career, I've sparred, I've sparred,
like, I think, 12 world champions, you know, I've sparred all the, you know, Dylan White,
Cesaro, you know, like, the more recent, like, Bacoli, I've sparred, like, the recent big
names, I've sparred the old world champions, I've trained with Peter Fury, Jamie Moore,
Brendan Ingle, Dominic Ingle, I've sparred numerous different countries, I've fought
headline in the O2, I've got Lucas Brown on the show next week, talking about our fight
together, I've just had Lewis Ritson on, Lewis Ritson doesn't do interviews, but I've had
him on for an hour, an hour, me and Lewis for an hour, and it's, it's honestly, it's
honestly, like, if it wasn't, if I wasn't doing the interview, I would fucking love
to listen to that, it was brilliant, he never shut up for an hour, and, so I got good contacts,
really, and good stories and stuff, so, you know, I'm really enjoying it, and, and yeah,
I just wanted, I just wanted to, if people are enjoying it, I'll keep doing it, I guess.
Well, that's what I'm hoping, on Sundays, we could pick up a little bit on some of the
stuff that's from your channel, obviously, it will, that will direct people to your channel
for the full story, but, because there's so much interesting stuff to get through, and,
you know what's really random, you're the most random bloke ever, because one minute,
people online are talking about you fighting, um, their own football, Johnny Fisher, yeah,
and the next minute, something pops up on my phone, and you've actually interviewed
Johnny Fisher, and I watched it, and, you know, it's a great chat, that is so random, though, right?
Yeah, you know what, I really like Johnny Fisher, like, I'm his mate, but you know what, like,
all the fact, like, Nick Webb, um, Nick Webb, Lucas Browne, um, loads, at the top of my head,
um, I got on with 99% of them so well, do you know what I mean, like, I honestly did,
I got on with them so well, um, really nice bunch of people, you know, whether they beat me,
or I beat them, just a really nice bunch, really, and, um, yeah, so, it's just nice to,
when I get to tell these stories and stuff, it's just like, I get, I remember it, it's like,
it's like, I've not told these stories before, so it's like I'm hearing, it's like I'm going
through it all over again for the first time, you know, and, uh, I never thought I'd have a life,
like, like I've had, really, I never thought I'd have, like, a nice, like, you know what I mean,
so, it's just really nice to, to go back over it, I guess. How did you broach the issue, though,
because, obviously, people were at some stage, and I think there was some of the big promoters,
or the big promoters, trying to get you guys on together to, to, to hype up a little bit, but
how did it go from that to, Johnny, do you fancy doing a little interview, we'll just chat about
life and boxing? Um, you know what, I've, I've, I've kept in touch with Johnny since
starting 2019, kept in touch and spoke a little over the years and that, so, and I just thought,
you know what, I messaged him, I said, look, I'm doing a YouTube channel, do you want to come on,
and, you know, it was about, it was, I didn't, I said to him before, before I started this
recording, I said, look, I don't want to talk about me and you, because it's not about me,
it's that this is about you, like, you, you are the, you're the man at the moment, like,
I'm talking to you as a boxing fan, I want to know this, I want, I want to know what you think
about the Rodenko fight, his amateur background, I genuinely didn't know about his amateur
background, I've heard different stories, so I want to say about that, I want to talk about his
dad, I want to talk about what his dad's, his job and whatever else, so you see him online,
I wonder how he made his money and what he does, and, so I said, look, don't, do not even mention
me, because I have no interest, like, this is about you, so, and, like, with Richson tonight,
when I'm talking to these boxers, it's like, because as a fellow boxer, I'm so intrigued
about their career and what they did and stuff, so this YouTube channel, like, eventually, when
I've told my stories, I want to move on and ask these people questions, because I think there's
nobody better to ask a boxer questions than a fellow boxer, because I know what I want to ask,
I know what I want to know, do you know what I mean, and I feel like they open up to me more,
because it's like, they've got, like, a respect for me on that level, like, I'm like them.
But you know what, you're a really good interviewer, and I was always, I've always liked
Johnny Fisher, I remember when he used to, he was down at Peter Fury's before he turned professional,
and I've always liked him, but watching that conversation with you there, I liked him even
more, so you actually managed to bring out even more out of him, and so that's actually a good
skill to, it's hard to be a good interviewer. He's such a nice fellow, though, like, if I end up
which I may do, possibly, it may go past me in the next couple of months, you know, which is a shame,
but he's a really nice guy, but I've never really disliked anyone that I've boxed, really, do you
know what I mean, so it's like, people want to see dislike all the time, when they see a fight,
they're like, oh, they need to dislike each other, we need, like, we need some bad blood, we don't,
we just need a good fight, really, that's all that should matter. The fight's good, that's all that
should matter, but Johnny's such a nice fellow, he's got his head screwed on, you know what I mean,
like, I wish I was as clever as him, and as thoughtful and smart as him at the same age,
but yeah, so I really enjoyed it, I really enjoyed it, because like with Lewis tonight,
everyone's got a great story to tell, it's just getting it out of him, isn't it?
Absolutely, I cannot wait to watch that one, it's going to be, it's going to be great, that
tomorrow, tomorrow, yeah, I've got a schedule, I've had to move the schedule to fit him in,
because I've been on his case for three weeks, and Jack Catchall as well, if you're watching this,
yeah, I'm hunting you down, because he said, yeah, two weeks ago, I'll be missing you at 1pm,
mate, it's two and a half week, yeah, gone, and it's half eight, so where are you, that's what I
want to know, you know what, he's bad, he's bad on his phone, anyway, so I'll defend him a little
bit, but yeah, yeah, I'll be, I'll be a great, another great chat, that, you know, the stuff,
there's another interesting point I want to pick up on, I saw in one of the videos we did,
it was really, I think it might have been the Ingle video, I can't remember, yeah,
you talked about being a nervous kid, like being like a nervous and anxious kid,
obviously to meet you now, if someone just met you now, they wouldn't, they wouldn't think that,
because you're kind of like, you exude a confidence, or at least a good facade of confidence,
yeah, and when, how did that change for you, because I think that's an important message for
youngsters, because I know a lot of kids now are full of anxiety and stuff, do you know what,
as a kid, like, my dad, my dad was, like, firm, do you know what I mean, he was strict, yeah,
and do you know what, like, me upbringing was good, like, I couldn't, I couldn't say, like,
do you know what I mean, I was fed, I had somewhere to live, so it weren't that bad,
but my dad were hard, do you know what I mean, and his dad were hard, and his dad were hard,
do you know what I mean, like, there were no, like, you know, you did something wrong,
you fucking know about it, kind of thing, and I think it knocked me confidence a bit, I think,
do you know, and yeah, I weren't, I weren't very confident, I was very shy, and,
but again, even at school, I could be a little fucker, do you know what I mean, I still had a
bit of character about me, but I was quiet and useless in situations where I didn't know anyone,
and I could be, yeah, I could be a bit standoffish, but when I went to Brendan's, like,
Brendan, mate, you put yourself out there a little bit, do you know, and it was just mixing around,
like, there was John Keaton, Richard Towers, and I'm going to face it, these old school pros,
old school pros, and old school people, you know, and they were decent people,
good people, and the, do you know what, like, they were strict with me as well, though,
do you know what I mean, like, you have to go in and shake, I used to go in and shake all their
hands, but they just brought, like, a confidence out of me, you know, you have to, it's who you're
hanging around with, it's who you're spending time with, I was spending time, not with bad kids,
or not, we're not nice kids, but we're just kids, you know, that didn't have much going for them,
and we were just happy just doing kid things, and all of a sudden I'm hanging around with these
champion boxers, you know, and people that have had experience, real life experience,
and I started knocking them out of them, and spending time with them, I started regurgitating
the things they're saying, I started believing what they're saying, I started to, to try and,
to try and, like, imitate them, kind of, and it worked for me as well, it worked for me, and
it brought me out of my shell, and I thought, you know what, if I can hold my own in conversation
with these people, then I can do it with anyone, so that was, that was the main thing, really,
that was the thing with Brendan, it was like, it weren't the boxing at the Ingle Gym that, for me,
what, what was the important thing, it was knocking, he was hanging around with all these
champion fighters, and champion people, and it just kind of rubbed off on me, you know,
and Brendan, on top of that, would take me everywhere, and make me mix with people,
and, and, and you know what, like, as a 16, 17 year old, like, I was Brendan's friend,
and that made me feel like the most special person ever, so all that confidence come from
hanging around with him, and listening to him, and him taking me places, you know, and, and I
were like, I'm, I'm Richard Towers and John Keaton's mate, I felt like, I felt 10 foot tall
at 16 saying that, do you know what I mean, so, for anyone out there now struggling, like,
and no confidence, or whatever else, or your upbringing's been tough in parts, you know,
you've got to go out there and mix and integrate with people, like, that are successful, and doing
well, and, and, you know, got the shit together, go, go and, you know, whether, whether that's
going to a boxing gym, or whether that's going to a, to a, it doesn't have to be boxing or sport,
it can be something else, go and mix, and, and be around people, like, doing good things,
it's really interesting, you know, because, you mentioned John Keaton there, and we've,
we've just done a really long sit-down podcast with John Keaton and Glyn Rhodes, MBE, on Peter
Fury's podcast, and, so you'll, you'll be, I think you'll be interested in it, I'll send it to you,
and it's out, it's out next Sunday. John, John Keaton, like, was, was my hero for a while,
when I started at the gym, it was him and Richard, really, like, I just looked, because I was,
I was a big kid, they were, I was waiting everywhere, I just looked up to him, you know,
I used to want to, I'd always be in the gym, I wouldn't have a day off, because I thought,
well, if I'm not in the gym, then I'm going to wonder where I am, you know, and I always
want to body-spam, even though we're hard, I'd always do my blows, and I'd train with him,
John Keaton's just the loveliest man ever, with, we're hard as nails as well, you know what I mean,
British champion, and Glyn, I trained with Glyn, I was at Glyn's gym for about eight months,
I trained with Glyn for about eight months, we just moved to Ellsbury, because Glyn and my dad
were really good friends, my dad boxed for England, his amateur, he gave Glyn the England
track suit that he wore, he told me, they've been great, they're still great friends now, so,
and that was the thing, really, that's what boxing gave me, I was lucky, like, Glyn, MBE,
isn't he? Again, I'm with Glyn three days a week at 18, you know, and you just mix in with these
people, if you hang around with idiots, you become an idiot, but if you hang around with these people
that are smart, got their shit together, doing good things, you've got a very good chance of
joining and doing it. Well, this is a perfect, sort of, because I want to, on Sunday, develop
into some of these stories from your younger days, and so if anyone has any questions about Dave's
younger days, the gyms he was around, that's the sort of stuff we would love to see for this trial
run on Sunday, and then after that, they're going to be live, but I'd love to delve more into that
on Sunday, please, Dave, like, that sort of stuff, your younger days. I was actually quite surprised
at the video about the sparring, I know it's good money, I know it's really good money,
the Klitschko and the Usyk camps that you mentioned were good money, but it's occupational hazard,
isn't it? It's quite dangerous, because you're in there to give those guys confidence,
any good camp is set up for them to get confidence by the end of it, so do you think it was worth it?
Yeah, because you know, when I was sparring with these sparring trips, I wasn't going for the
money, I was going for the experience. If Alexander Usyk or Klitschko would have said to me, look,
we'll fly you over, pay all your travel, but you're not going to get paid, but you can come
and be in the camping spot, I'd have run out, I'd have bloody swam, I can't swim actually that well,
I'd have gone there, I'd have gone there for free, of course I would have, I'd have gone for free,
I wouldn't have, I'm 32, I'd be like, what are you paying me, the first question would come out
of my mouth, but their experiences, a lot of people say it's not a lot of money really,
and it's not, because Prevec wanted me to spar in Russia, I was going to go, two reasons stopped me,
this isn't exclusive, I was possibly going to fight Prevec for 400 grand if I beat Price,
and then, how many months after that, 15 months later, they get in touch and go, look,
we want you to come to Russia and spar Prevec, I said, well how much are you paying,
I think it was 2,000 euro, for two weeks, that's like a 398 grand swing,
and I'd have to spar, what, four or six rounds three times a week,
so you know what I mean, 398 grand less for more rounds, so the money isn't great, but you know
what it is, it's experience, if you're a young heavyweight and you're going to the Klitschko
camps and I was sparring all these people, it's great, but while I'm saying I'd do it for free,
you deserve the money, because let me tell you something, when you're a paid sparring partner,
you earn your money, that's a definite. Yeah, this is why we need to do this,
because there's so many, obviously your channel is the priority for what you're doing, but
stuff to pick up on, we can just pick up on some of this, because people have so many questions,
I've got so many questions about this part of your life, it's fascinating, I know you've done
the punch power ratings thing, but can you definitively say in your head, your top three
hardest spars? Yeah, and if so, let me know whilst you're having a think, because I'm going
to put it just on you, because this will probably end up being a separate clip. My top three hardest
spars? I'll just move it on you whilst I'm thinking about this. Top three hardest sparring
partners or the top three hardest single spars? Hardest single spars. Well number one was Joe
Joyce in around 2013 or 14, I think, would have been 13, and that was number one. It was six
rounds, and at the end of it, I went back to get the, I left the IS because I sparred on the Great
Britain team, and I sparred for Sheffield, and I remember, I just remember, I can remember the
spar, I remember Richie Woodall saying, you're one of the toughest men I've ever seen, and then I
remember leaving, and then the next 20 minutes, I was a blur, and I just remember my girlfriend
ringing, me ringing my girlfriend and being like, what am I doing today? And she's like, you're
sparring, and she went, have you sparred? And I was like, yeah, I think I sparred, yeah. And she
went, well, what are you on about? I said, well, what do I need to do? And I said, well, you need
to come home and get the train home, and yeah, and I'm like, bloody hell, yeah, I wrote the
um, so yeah, that was, that was tough, um, that would be number one. He just, he just, just didn't
stop punching me for six rounds. Yeah. Um, other hard spars, I've had some really hard spars with
a fella called Simon McLelly. He was Commonwealth Games amateur. Me and him used to knock the granny
out of each other. He was a good puncher, wasn't he? Like, uh, he was an unorthodox swinger, wasn't
he? Yeah. We had some horrific spars. Look, and actually I was a, naturally I was, um,
naturally bigger than him. Yes. So I probably got the better of the sparring more often than not
due to the size of me. Well, fuck me. If I could go back in time, I'd just say, look, Simon, we
don't need to do this mate, really. Do you know what I mean? Like, it's pointless. And it was
bad-blooded as well. Like, he wanted to stick the nut in. Um, you know, like it was really,
it was really a bad feeling there, even though we were mates. But as soon as that bell went
sparring, Mick Marsden had to jump in the ring a few times and separate us in sparring, we trained
together. But you know what, like as soon as the final bell went for that, at the end of that spar,
touch gloves, I don't know, you're laughing your head off. But me and him, I would have some
horrible spots that looking back now was ridiculous. Um, and then, and who else would
I say? Who else would be in the top three for like most, but they are just sparring.
You know what, I had some hard spots. I'd say Joshua, too, because we do 10 rounders.
Ooh, okay. Okay. And I could, and I was 21 years old and I could be, I could have been 20 stone,
21 stone, really overweight by then. Cause I wasn't a grown man. Then I was a kid. I
was really fat. And I do 10 rounds and some spars, I won't even land a scoring punch. I'll
just get me a punch for 10 rounds, um, survive for 10. And I don't know why I live and looking
back at it, if I, you know, I'm a cracker than that. Some days I think, why, what would they do?
Let me do that really. You know, cause I always, and he never, ever, he never, ever stopped me
in sparring, not even one time, never put me in any trouble, but he'd make a mess of me all the
months at a time. So I'd probably say Joyce, Valili and Joshua. Yeah.
What happened to Simon Valili? Cause I remember he did, he fought Wally, didn't he, in a shootout,
I think it was. And then what, what, what happened to Simon Valili? Cause he's not been back
on a big, in a big fight since, has he?
I, I last seen Simon at an amateur boxing show in Leeds and, uh, he just came up and,
you know what, like, I really like the fella, me. I have so much respect for him because we used to
knock lumps off each other. And that was in 2012, 2011, we first sparred, up until about 2017,
18. Um, and you know what, we got on really well. We did get on really well. Do you know what I
mean? Good bloke, you know, but in terms of his career, like he, he was one of the most talented
fighters I've ever been in with. Like he was, he was unbelievable on his day, fit, at cruiserweight.
Yeah.
Oh, that's fascinating, man. Cause I didn't, they're not necessarily the names I would have
thought you would have gone. So again, these, these are the thought sort of things. Cause it,
you know, we were tapping on things that perhaps are on, are not covered yet, but you know,
this is why people need to tune into this, this new show. And the reason I'm trying these different
angles is because Chris wants me to do this so we can fiddle around with different things when we
have guests on and stuff. Fascinating. I really appreciate you doing this by the way with us.
Cause I know you probably get loads of people asking you to do stuff and there's other channels
and there's other things, but it'll be, it'll be interesting content and it'll be really,
it'll be kind of like this, just to note, just to, just to chill out chat. Um, the last topic
I want to ask you about Dave, the last topic, you mentioned Bacoli there, Sparring Bacoli.
Now he's just had that win over Anderson. He's had to go away, fight the unbeaten kid again.
Everyone's been avoiding this guy for years. Anyway, Bacoli, do you think you'll now get
some, do you think you'll now get that massive opportunity and where's he going to get it?
Do you know what? It all depends on this. Uh, that, that take, I'll shake. It all depends on him.
He owes all the cards, don't he? You know, if he, if he takes a shine to you, like Mark Chamberlain,
you know, we've got Mark Chamberlain now, Joe Aiden sparring, Josh Padley for the Chamberlain
fight actually. Interesting. We were sparring Padley yesterday, sparring him again tomorrow,
but, um, it's, it depends what that, uh, take, I'll shake the sides really. He can, he can,
he can make you a millionaire overnight and give you all the opportunities you want. So,
you know, after watching Bacoli destroy Anderson the other day, I reckon he will get the chance.
I expect to see him with a Zhang or a Cabell, you know, and if you, and if he beats either of
them, we have to see him with, with, with, with one of the champions, I think. That's what I
actually love about this format that's going on in Saudi because certain people can become stars
who like look at Nick Ball, for example, he lost his world. He lost that world title fight, even
though it was a very close fight. And then he would normally have been all right. See you later,
mate. You've had your chance, but then he got it next. Everyone avoids that guy. And he's been
brought back a couple of times for big paydays because he keeps beating people. He's not supposed
to be. Yeah. You know what? When, when, when the fellow, uh,
take our state fellow got involved, I was a bit like, Hmm, I'm not sure how this is going to go.
Is he going to work? Is he good for boxing? He's the best thing to happen to boxing since I've
got it since I got involved in 2008 is the best thing to happen. You know, I'm not happy that
there's only put in pay for you on all the time because they said they weren't going to do pay
for you. And now everything seems to be paid for you. But as a boxing fan, these shows are
believable. You know, Miller always disappointed a bit the other day, but for me, it's like,
you can't say how these fights are going to go. You have to judge these fights before they happen.
You have to judge these shows on what, on what, um, on what the card is not on how it works out.
Cause you can't, you can't say you can't ever promise a fight is going to be good or not. So
every car that they've put on this real season, every, every car that's been on, it's been
exceptional. It's going to show you sick, you know, that alone for me, cause I know how much
that costs. I was speaking to someone that told me I was about going to cost a couple of years
ago. And I said, look, I remember speaking to her, uh, when Calvin box, uh, we haven't shown
for him, I think you, uh, he said, some fella told me this, this fella, because this is what
they want. This is what they need. So that, that wouldn't have happened without him. So
I think it's the best thing to happen to boxing really is what we're getting at the minute.
It's unbelievable. Fair enough. Cause I remember when we used to do interviews and we were kind
of on a bit of a winged about cards, but it's, as you say, as you say, you can't win when you see
in a car and you're thinking, wow, on the other side, the sky card the other day was, was horrific.
Okay. Okay. You mean the bouncy one? It was terrible. Right. Right. Okay.
I like what I will main event. Yeah. And I will really main events on the side of that on sky
me and Brown, she's all Josh Kelly called Dina. Like, and now like you did that journeyman winning
day before boxing on a sky show, you know, like Dale, I was a good fight, but he shouldn't be
fighting a big middle way day before Wayne on sky. Do you know what I mean? And like, I just thought
I looked at the card and I just thought this is, this is, this is Paul really for sky sports
standards, but we're really poor to be honest. And that's not a dig at anyone on the card,
but he just likes any, he likes any real star power. You know, I'll just, I would just point
it really. Cause when anyone on sky, the cards at one point were absolutely brilliant. Every time
that card, they were poor. I thought I did really enjoy the shoot out. I'm not going to lie. I
because you know what I knew it was going to, they both promised it was going to be like that.
And sometimes people promise it's going to be like that and it isn't, but it will actually
for me, I don't, I just was jumping up and down. Yeah. Well, the best I've seen for ages,
but like I said earlier, in terms of judging good cards and bad cards, you have to do that before
the fire before the fires happen. You can get a bit of look and get a fire. That's a bit of look
really. Cause if McKenna would have used the first nod down, he's the one in the first round,
you know, his own fault. It tends to that shoot out because he went, he went in swinging wild
when he, he could have finished the job. He could have finished his job and it had been,
it would have been what it was. But, but yeah, I was having a moment really on that.
I was just having a bow. Yeah. It is what it is. It's, it's a, so it's just an honor of
open chat. I did. I loved, um, you know, Calum Smith. Cause when I come to interview you,
that was it. Calum Smith, Calum Simpsons, um, amateur club. When I come to interview you,
it's great to see he has gone through the ranks very quickly, but he actually is,
he's doing what I needed to do. And obviously Charlie made it difficult for him and awkward
for him, but he is stepping up every time, isn't he? And doing what he needs to do.
Yeah. You know what? I didn't really rate him to be honest before the other day. Um,
cause technically he's not, he's not great to be honest. He does loads of things wrong,
but like you say, he's weighing in day before 11, seven, 13, he's getting in the ring at nearly
14. So super fit, you know, he's tough, clearly heavy handed. He's going to take some beating,
isn't he? Yeah. He's like, he's like a bit like, I'm not saying any way he fights like Joe Joyce,
but it's like that same kind of like, you don't realize the strength of him, um, and the power
till you're in with him. And then you go, right. Bloody hell. And the other day with Shelley,
I thought, wow, he must be really strong, really big at the weight, really heavy handed. So yeah,
I was impressed with him the other day. I would like to see, we've got to see him in with Jeffers,
you know, really good. I love going to see him with a puncher. But, um, after the other day,
I thought, yeah, I can see it now. Yeah. Fair enough. Um, just this last bit day,
would you mind coming back to like that? So you're not sorry. Um, well, look mate, we're,
we've had, we're coming up to 40 minutes there again. They all hit that magic mark. And I'll
tell you what people always comment at the end and said, we've watched the whole thing.
So I, you know, I appreciate it though. Yeah. But Dave, every time you say that someone messages
and says, I am at the end, this is what's just been said. And they actually quote what's been
said. And I think fair play somewhat, someone out there is, is your biggest fan who's watching
this. It's nice though. It is nice. I do appreciate I'm watching. Well, guys, a final
reminder. If you are, if you are still watching, you are definitely a hardcore David Allen fan.
If you're still watching, get your comments below, get your questions in, and we're going to pick all
the best questions. Obviously we might even do a competition for the best question. Dave can pick
the best question and you might get something. I don't know. I'll get some gloves and Dave can sign
them and we'll send them to you. We'll work something out for you, but, um, get your questions
in for David Allen and I will ask them for date on Sunday. And then afterwards, every week after
that, every weekend after that, it's going to be live shows and we're just going to see how they
go basically. Um, I appreciate it, mate. Look, I really appreciate it. Honestly, I'm looking
forward to doing some of these catch-ups with you, especially just looking at some proper
boxing topics and some of your, your own history and stuff that's important to you. I can't wait
to talk about it, mate. Um, keep going with the channel cause the channel's great and it's a
really, it's good content as well. So yeah, man, I appreciate it, mate. And I, uh, I look forward
to Sunday. Top man, top man. Thank you very much.
