And so that night, God gave me a vision and I am not used to getting visions from God so
specifically and so clearly. What's up guys? I'm Melissa. Welcome to my all new channel where we
tackle hard questions, dive into the Bible and see what God says about them. I used to have a
channel back in 2015 and it was focused on beauty and fashion content, but now God has placed a
whole new direction on my heart and I'm going to be focused on faith-based content. I really
wanted to start this first video with a personal story because I recently got engaged. I got
engaged last week actually. And during this past week, I've been thinking about God's faithfulness
and God's timing and how he wrote our love story. So I really want to open up about how I met my
future husband in early 2019 and what God has done for us in the past year and a half. So I
hope you enjoy this first video. Don't forget to subscribe for more faith-based content.
And with that being said, let's dive in. All right, so where to begin? The story of Brian and I starts
back in early 2019. We actually met at church. We met at our young adults group, which met every
Tuesday at 7 p.m. and I was a leader there. I honestly never thought I would meet my future
husband at a young adults group because I knew pretty much everyone there and it was a really
small group. One day, a new guy came to the group and I honestly didn't really notice him.
He told me later on that I was one of the first people to greet him and welcome him into the group,
which I don't even remember that. What I do remember was being in small groups with him.
So our young adults group would get into small groups and we would talk about different biblical
topics or different things regarding our faith. And so every time we would be in a small group
together, he would always have interesting things to say about God. And it really intrigued me,
especially how he hears from God. And so we would always have little small talks about our faith
and family and whatnot. And I thought to myself, man, he sounds like a really cool guy.
But I didn't think about wanting to date him or anything because I was really happy being single
at the time. So early May rolls around and our young adults group decides to have a serve day.
And both Ryan and I decided to go to that serve day. And basically, we were going to volunteer
out of school and we were going to help paint the hallways. And this actually happened on May 4th,
the day before my birthday, which was on May 5th, obviously. We ended up painting the same hallway
together and we had a really good conversation for about two or three hours. This was probably
the longest conversation we ever had together because before this, we would just have little
talks in our young adults group. And we just talked about our faith. We talked about where
we came from, where we grew up, what we did for a living. And honestly, I was like, wow,
he's just such an interesting guy. But again, I didn't think about anything romantic. I just
thought I have really good conversations with this guy and he has a really cool relationship
with God. I honestly have never met any guy that had that type of relationship with God. It was so
unique. It was really interesting. And so by the end of our conversation, and I mean, what a time
to have a good conversation when you both are serving together. It was, I think, definitely
something that God placed in our laps. By the end of it, he was talking about different podcasts
that he was listening to. And I told him about some podcasts I was listening to. And I told him
I would send a few of the podcasts that I found really interesting. And so later that night,
I messaged him on Facebook and I sent him some of my podcasts, which is so random. It wasn't a DM
on Instagram. It wasn't via text messaging. It was Facebook. I don't really use Facebook and
Ryan hates social media. And so the only thing he really kind of uses is Facebook. But I messaged
him that night. And from then on, we had a really deep conversation every single day of that week
about God, about our struggles, our highs and lows, all via Facebook. I've never had the most
deep discussion on Facebook with anyone ever. By the end of the week, we basically ended off
saying, hey, I'll see you next week at our Young Adults Group. The following week rolls around.
We are at, oh no, I dropped my engagement ring. It's loose and I need to get it fitted too.
Okay, we're going to roll with the punches. So the following week rolls around and we're at our
Young Adults Group again and we were having a potluck. And I was telling him about a trivia
night that some of us were going to be going to the following day. And so he was like, awesome,
can you send me more information? And I was like, yeah, totally. And so we exchanged numbers.
Side note, Ryan later confessed that during that week, he was praying to God, asking God to give
him an opportunity to ask me out because he was really nervous and he didn't know how to do it.
So he literally prayed to God, please give me an opportunity to just have a conversation with
Melissa so I can just ask her out. Funny thing, like that week, we exchanged numbers. And then
the following day, trivia was going to happen, but it ended up getting canceled. So I texted him
saying that, hey, trivia is going to get canceled, but I'm in the area if you want to get dinner or
something. And in my mind, I thought, oh, he seems like a cool guy friend, we can just have a casual
dinner. In his mind, he thought, wow, God is answering my prayers right now because she's
texting me and telling me to go grab dinner. I mean, if it doesn't get any more obvious than
that, then I don't know what's obvious. So for him, he thought it was the perfect opportunity.
So we ended up getting sushi that night and we had another really good conversation about God.
And I think this is really important. God really opened the doors for Ryan and I to come together
because of our relationships with God. We were both single. We were both really focused on being
fulfilled in God. And so whenever we talked, we would talk about what God is teaching us,
how God has been speaking to us. And that happened again that night during sushi.
And again, in my mind, I was like, he seems like a cool guy, like an awesome guy friend to have.
And then in his mind, he was like, cool, I'm going to ask her out tonight. Later that night,
we ended up staying at the sushi place for about three or four hours. And then he walked me to my
car and then he said, Hey, so like, I had a really good conversation with you and I've enjoyed
getting to know you. Uh, would you like to go out with me on a date? And I was totally surprised.
Like, honestly, another girl would probably be like, oh, maybe he would ask me out on a date.
But for me, I was like, totally deer in the headlights. I didn't even expect that to happen.
And I was like, sure. Like, why not? I'll, I'll go on a date with you. And from then on,
we started to go on dates and that is when our story began. Okay. So now we move into a season
of dating and the first few months of our relationship, I was honestly really hesitant.
I was praying a lot. I was asking God to really show me what his will is in this relationship.
I didn't want to be caught up in emotions. I wanted to think logically about this
because I was tired of dating guys that weren't worth my time. I really wanted to be intentional
about either finding my future husband or staying single. And that's a prayer. I really
earnestly prayed to God. I told God, honestly, either bring me my future husband, or I don't
want to meet anyone that gets me distracted. Like that was literally where my mind was at.
So during the first few months, I was asking God to give me signs to show me how Ryan and I's
relationship was going to progress, whether it was even in God's will to progress. And so I think
this put me in a really good mindset to not be blinded by anything or to not let my emotions
take over. Every single date that we had, honestly, I thought to myself, this is just getting better
and better and better. But I really want to hear from God. One night in particular really changed
my perspective. I was alone with God and I was praying about Ryan. And I asked God, can you just
give me a sign or just something specific to show me whether this relationship is in your will.
And when I prayed that specific prayer, we were going on our third month of dating.
And this has honestly never happened to me before, but I was really focused on hearing from God more
and more clearly. And so that night God gave me a vision and I am not used to getting visions from
God so specifically and so clearly. This vision took place in Ryan's house. I was basically on
the rooftop of his house looking down and I could see him praying, kneeling on the side of his bed.
And he seemed to be praying earnestly. And that was it. That was my whole vision. And I was like,
wow, okay, so maybe God's telling me that Ryan has a great relationship with God. And that's all I
could really think of. I wasn't sure whether I should bring it up to Ryan or not. But the following
week we went out to dinner and we were talking and I told him, hey, so this is super random, but
I got a vision of you. And I basically told him how the vision played out. And he was like,
oh my gosh, like that's how I pray every single night. I pray kneeling on the side of my bed.
And if I didn't believe in God, I would think this is a weird stranger things episode because
we love watching stranger things together. And so I was like, wow, okay, so this is really specific.
And once he said that to me, that was kind of confirmation for me personally. I felt like God
was telling me that he was going to bless this relationship and to keep going. And honestly,
that was confirmation because he was basically showing me a peek into Ryan's personal relationship
with God. The following day, I actually went to Ryan's house and I went into his room and I showed
him specifically how he was praying in my vision. And Ryan was like, wow, that's exactly how I pray.
So it was incredible to see how God was just being so faithful and confirming so many things for me
so that I was able to really be content and be assured that this was from God. I think this is
key, whether you're single or whether you're dating to really pray to God for specifics, because,
you know, God really wants to guide you and give you wisdom in the relationships that you have so
that you won't get hurt. And a lot of the times, especially as girls, we can focus in on emotions
or focus in on, oh, wow, this guy's attractive, or this guy has this, that, whatever. And sometimes
we can easily dismiss or ignore red flags, but really making God the center of the relationship
and the center of your life really helps you see things clearly. And this was key with my
relationship with Ryan. June 1st, we celebrated our one year and we did talk about marriage and
when we wanted to get married and when we wanted to get engaged. And Ryan specifically told me that
he wanted to propose probably end of August, early September. Once August hit, I thought to myself,
he's probably going to propose soon, but it will probably be by the end of August,
early September. So I wasn't expecting it to happen on August 16th. A week before August 16th
happened, he told me, hey, next week, I'm going to take a few days off of work. And I really wanted
to go to Laguna and do a sunset hike. And then before that we can eat at a really good restaurant
on the beach. And I thought to myself, oh, cool. That's like a really cute date idea.
Didn't think anything of it. Sunday rolls around and we go on this date. I thought to myself,
I'm probably going to just be wearing casual clothing. I put a little bit of makeup on,
but I was just like, eh, it's just going to be a chill day. We get to Laguna around 3 p.m. We
both live in Southern California, by the way. And the wait for the restaurant took about two hours.
So we were hanging out at the beach for two hours before they called us. So they ended up calling us
in at around 5 p.m. And we had a really good dinner. We had really good salmon. It was just
a great date. And the restaurant was just amazing. It's Beachcomber Cafe in Laguna. So if you are in
that area, I definitely recommend it. But by the end of dinner, it was around 615 and Ryan was kind
of pressed for time because he didn't want to miss the sunset. And so he told me, oh, we have
to leave soon. And I thought to myself, OK, like, do you want me to change? And he was like, well,
if you can do it really quickly. And I was like, honestly, I'll just throw on a tank top and my
hiking boots and I'm good to go. So by that point, I thought to myself that we're definitely not
getting engaged today because I would have worn a different outfit. I put on my hiking boots. Then
we drive 15 minutes to the hiking spot. And to get to the specific location he wanted to go to,
we had to go uphill for about 20 minutes. And I was sweating going up that hill. I put my hair
in a bun. Throughout the day, I was thinking maybe he would propose. But then I thought to myself,
oh, this is a really casual date. And as I was going up that mountain, I was like, this is
definitely not happening today because I'm sweating. My hair's a mess. My skin's oily.
It's just not going to happen. And I was going to get my hair done the following day. So I was like,
for sure, I'm not expecting this whatsoever. I get up the mountain and we find the spot that
Ryan wanted to look out into the sunset. It was cloudy and we missed the sunset. There was barely
any sunset. There was just a little bit left. And so he was like, let's just take a picture here.
Why not? And I was like, OK. Because we do that sometimes on hikes. And so he brought his tripod.
He set it up. He put his iPhone on there. And I'm like standing on this rock. But by that time,
I went from being so sweaty and hot to being super cold because there was a gust of wind
that decided to just blow my hair and just everything. And so I was just freezing there.
And it's funny because he pressed record on his iPhone. And I looked so mad. Like,
I look like I'm having a miserable time, but I was just super cold. And then he ends up going
on the rock and we pose for a picture. And then he's like, oh, let's turn around and do another
pose. So then we pose again. And then all of a sudden he's like starting to go down. And I'm
like, what is he doing? I'm like, did he drop something? I was so confused. And he ends up
proposing. And I was like, oh, my gosh. I'm in a bind. I thought to myself, oh, my hair's not done.
But then I was like, also, I need to be present because he said really sweet things to me. And
then he started tearing up. And I thought to myself, I really need to be present in this
moment. This is probably what God wants for me. Because if I did have a heads up, I would have
a different outfit, I would have refreshed my makeup, and I would have made things look perfect.
But at that moment, I felt like God was saying to me, this is a blessing, be present in it,
you're never going to be ready for anything. Nothing is ever going to be picture perfect.
This is a special moment. And so I thought to myself, okay, I'm going to soak it all in.
And he planned, honestly, the perfect date for an engagement. It was great, too, because I wasn't
expecting it. And so we're both really excited. We are going to get married early February,
probably. So we have five to six months to plan a small intimate wedding. It's just going to be
family. But like I said before, it's really cool to see how God wrote our love story and how God
brought Ryan into my life in early 2019, when I least expected it. And the key was that I was in
a really good place in my life. I was really growing in my relationship with God. And I
literally told God that I didn't want to waste my time with any guy anymore. I was done doing that.
And so I want to encourage you, wherever you are in life, whatever season you're in in life,
don't let anyone pressure you to be in a relationship or don't feel the pressure
to be defined by a relationship. Make sure your identity is on God. During 2019,
God really spoke to me regarding Jeremiah 2913. If you seek me, you will find me. And I remember
praying that verse, praying to God, may I seek you and find you. I want to really do that this
year. And I said that to God early January or late January, early February. And man,
did he blow my expectations of just really showing me his providence, his faithfulness,
and how he wants an intimate relationship with me and with Ryan. And it was really cool to see how
he confirmed that this person was my future husband. And it's not until you find that
personal fulfilling relationship with God that you will find joy and you will find peace,
because life isn't easy. It is not. And it's going to be a struggle. It's going to be hard.
But if you choose God, everything falls into place. All right, guys, I hope this video gave
you some encouragement. I don't know what season you're in right now, but I pray that God speaks
to you clearly and just continue to pursue him at all costs. That's what Ryan and I continue to
learn, that life isn't about my needs or his needs. It's about serving God and serving others.
And this is something that God continues to remind me every day, because I honestly fall
short all the time, but God gives grace freely. So let me know your thoughts in the comments below,
whether you're single, whether you're dating, what is God teaching you? And don't forget to
subscribe for more faith-based videos. My next series is going to be a spiritual warfare series,
and I will also have a wedding series as well, talking about what God is teaching
Ryan and I through this new exciting season of being engaged and planning a wedding. And yeah,
I hope you all are having a wonderful week, and I will see you all very soon for another video.
Bye, guys.
