#AntiqueRestoration"Conservator Olympia Diamond tells us about the overwhelming task of conserving 'Virgin and Child in Glory' by Bartolomé Esteban Murillo.
When the painting first came into the studio, when I first saw it, I was quite overwhelmed actually
at how large, how many colors, how many different types of methods Murillo used when he was painting.
So at first I was quite overwhelmed with what I was going to be undertaking, but as I began to
really start to look using the different investigative techniques that we have here,
using infrared and x-ray and optical microscopy, I was able to get a really good understanding
of what all the elements of the painting and what I was actually dealing with and
understanding that helped me get a better understanding of Murillo's technique and
his hands. So it was really, then I felt really excited and confident to move forward.
I feel so excited and really thrilled to be able to see it on the wall and all the hard work that
Santhi's done in making this a beautiful presentation. I'm really, really
very overwhelmed now to see it and it's on the wall.
