It's Day 2 at Queen Charlotte Lodge in Haida Gwaii. We started the day jigging for halibut on top of a hotspot called 'The Pinnacle', a hump that comes up to about 280 feet in the North Pacific. The limits of halibut have changed significantly over the past 20 years. You used to be able to keep a 400 pound halibut 7 feet long and no one would ask questions. But stocks have been declining and the updated slot limits help ensure the big breeding females have a chance to lay their eggs and conserve the population. Honestly, any halibut over 80 pounds in my personal experience isn't the best table fare. So we were more than happy to get our limit of chickens (small halibut). Then we finally started hooking into the salmon. We bagged a few nice chinook and wild coho before heading inshore to jig for rockfish. This place is so magical. The serenity you feel out here is indescribable. Whales, eagles, deer, and the most beautiful coastline in the country. Hope you enjoy the episode! Let me know what I can do better next time.
