On 25th September, a band of 1066 warriors left York to trek south by horse and foot. On October 14th they will arrive at the site of the Battle of Hastings, 950 years to the day that King Harold met William, Duke of Normandy's invading force.
We're here in the glorious city of York to commemorate the Battle of Hastings in 1066
and of course King Harold's March of that year which would have taken him from this city
down to meet the Normans in what is arguably the most decisive battle of our history and while
we're doing that we'll be telling the story of the Norman conquest as we go and no organisation
is more dedicated to preserving England's story in our history than English heritage.
So I hope as we leave the city of York tonight for 20 days with us arriving at Battle Abbey
on the Friday the 14th of October as King Harold did and I hope you'll all wish us
well on our journey. We're going to have a fantastic trip. Thank you very much.
We've travelled 75 miles so far by my reckoning from York down to Lincoln.
And how's it gone so far? How are the group spirits?
Really good. It has been tough. First couple of days we're sort of finding our pace and we
probably pushed a bit too hard on the first day and then we suffered for it but now I think we're
settling down. I'm feeling great actually. I'm feeling really good. I just want to get marching again.
