Semper Fidelis (Latin for 'ever faithful') is an American military march composed by John Philip Sousa in 1888. It is the official march of the United States Marine Corps, which has used 'Semper Fidelis' as its motto since 1883.
The inspiration for the composition of the march came from a conversation Sousa had with Chester A. Arthur, the 21st President of the United States, when he was bandmaster of the United States Marine Band. In this conversation, Arthur expressed that he did not like the official presidential salute of the United States, Hail to the Chief. Sousa noted that Hail to the Chief was an old Scottish boatman's song, and Arthur suggested that Sousa compose a more appropriate composition for the office of the President. In response to the request, Sousa composed two works: Presidential Polonaise (1886) and, two years later, Semper Fidelis (1888). However, neither piece became established as a presidential salute, and Hail to the Chief is still played today in honour of the President.
The name Semper Fidelis is based on the motto of the United States Marine Corps. The same motto is used by the Grenadiers of the Swiss Army. The Devonshire Regiment of the British Army used it until it was amalgamated with other regiments in 1958.
