Boondocking at Kofa National Wildlife Refuge. There Are Palm Trees in this Desert Canyon.

We went camping for free at the Kofa National Wildlife Refuge in Arizona. There is a hike into Palm Canyon that we did, but getting to the viewpoint was not enough for us. We climbed up into the canyon to get a closer look at Arizona's only native palm trees. Join us to see where we camped and what the hike is like.
Kofa National Wildlife Refuge is close to Quartzsite, Arizona on highway 95 (only 30 minutes south). Boondocking/Dry camping is permitted here for a maximum of 14 days, however, there are no services such as water or dumping station. The closest services are in Quartzsite, so come prepared. We enjoyed a strong mobile signal around the camping area, except for in the canyon where the high rock walls blocked our cell service.
Palm Canyon trail hike is an easy in and out half mile trail to a viewpoint of the palm trees that are located up high in a narrow side canyon on the north side of the canyon. From there, there is no defined trail to access the palms, but it is possible to climb and scramble your way up to them on difficult terrain of loose rock and a steep grade. Alternately, there are other easy-moderate trails from the palm view sign to explore deeper into the canyon, also unofficial and unmarked.
