Mariah Carey sits down with E! News' Keltie Knight to chat about her upcoming Las Vegas & Christmas shows, and is thrilled to be crowned the creator of those famous "Heartbreaker" jeans. For even more, tune in to E! News Mon through Thurs at 11 PM on E!
You cut your jeans off so they're the lowest little jeans in the whole world,
and now that trend is back.
So you're mad that the trend is back?
I am mad at you for inventing the trend the first time.
Thank you for acknowledging that I invented it.
The fashion, the glamorousness.
How does one stay so Mariah?
You're just always fabulous.
It's always glamorous. It's always superstar.
It has nothing to do with me.
My stylist, Will Fredo, is over there.
But like when you wear a sweat pant, you have like a sequined sweat pant, a fabulous, glamorous sweat...
Do you ever just wear...
Ooh, a sequined sweat pant. That's kind of cute.
Do you ever just get up in the morning and pull like the ugliest old t-shirt from the drawer?
No, I'll pull an old sweater and like throw a sweater on with some tight pants like those...
What did you call those?
Like a legging, like a spanky legging.
Yeah, okay.
Mariah Carey, I have a bone to pick with you.
Oh dear.
Because you made the heartbreaker video.
Yes.
You cut your jeans off so they were the lowest little jeans in the whole world and now that trend is back.
So you're mad that the trend is back?
I am mad at you for inventing the trend the first time.
Thank you for acknowledging that I invented it.
You invented...
I mean, what are these people doing when they don't even give me any credit?
I looked around at all these designers and they all had the ripped off, the jeans with the top ripped off.
And I was like, me and my stylist just sliced it and cut it off and ripped it off.
But now it's back.
I know, I can't.
Can we do it again?
I mean, us wearing them?
I would wear them.
I need to find some of my old ones.
Okay.
But I am annoyed that I pretty much invented that moment.
Yeah.
And nobody gave me credit for it.
Well, we're giving you credit now.
You just gave me credit for that.
I gave you credit.
You know, you've done nothing with your life and career.
The only thing this woman has done is give us low rise jeans.
Enough with her.
God, you'd think you'd do something.
Write a song, why don't you?
I'll try.
I'm sorry.
Dem babies are 13 years old.
Yes.
How is this possible?
You are the mother to teens.
I know.
Normally, I would say, well, here's the thing.
I'm eternally 12, so I don't even know how it's possible.
Right.
How did that happen?
How hard is it to have teen kids?
And I was thinking about, is the karma coming back around?
Anything you were like as a teenager,
are you now like, oh, wow.
OK, here we go.
I love them so much.
They're really good kids.
You know what I mean?
I don't think that they're bad or evil in any way like I was.
That's what I'm asking.
No, they're really good kids.
And they're very smart.
And they're funny.
And I just, you know, I'm the man.
Yeah, how are you?
Like, how are you as a mom?
Like, are you tough?
Are you, do they want to be in showbiz with you?
Are they over it?
Do they think you're cool?
Do they want to come see the show?
I don't know what they think.
They did want to come see the show the other night.
But I was like, you know, I didn't
know if they really wanted to come
or if it was somebody else saying it.
I don't know.
You never know.
Am I mean?
No.
Am I lenient?
Probably.
Because I don't want to be that person that's
like the bleak one in the crowd.
They don't want to be around me or something.
New music.
Have you been writing?
I have been writing.
I have been working.
I'm not going to say it's coming tomorrow.
But as soon as possible, I don't want to say soon.
Because soon gives the wrong connotation.
So we won't say that.
But I've been working.
I've been in the studio.
And it's exciting.
It's interesting.
Like, I think about artists like you
who have written so many of your own songs and so many hits
and have had such staying power.
It's like, do you ever just run out of things to write about?
I don't think I do.
Because it's my love.
I love songwriting.
It's just my favorite thing ever.
Do you feel like we could ever see Mariah the musical?
We had Cher the musical.
Alicia Keys just had huge success
using her songs in a musical.
I mean, your songs are so beautiful.
There are so many beautiful ballads.
Like, do you think you would ever maybe take your memoir,
go back to your roots, kind of do something like that?
Well, I'm working on a couple of things now.
I felt it.
Look at her eyes.
I felt it.
But it's a couple of things that I've been working for a while.
So let's hope that happens sooner than later.
OK.
But, you know, between that and this other concept
that I had to do, little musical moments.
This Vegas run has been so successful.
You have been forced, due to extreme demand,
to extend, to extend.
How much fun are you having doing the show?
I'm having so much fun doing the show and seeing the fans.
It's like a whole thing.
It's a celebration of Mimi.
Does it blow your mind every night when you come out
and you see these people who have just loved you?
You have been the soundtrack to their life.
And they travel from all around the world
to come see this show.
It definitely blows my mind.
It's amazing.
And then there'll be some people that have really
been there for so many years.
And, like, you know, I'll see them and recognize them.
And it's amazing.
This guy that I know that's been a fan
and come to so many shows had a huge tattoo of me
two nights ago.
And I was like, wow.
He showed me from the stage.
It was that big?
Yeah.
How do you think they did?
I thought they did amazing.
OK, good.
As long as the likeness is good.
Like, did we get the full Mariah?
You know what I mean?
We got it, yeah.
When you're off stage in Vegas, what
does Mariah Carey do for fun?
Well, tonight we're going to go to a little restaurant.
My son wanted to go to a restaurant.
And so I was like, all right, let's go.
Do you ever, like, go to Topgolf?
Do you ever, like?
I went yesterday.
Did you know that?
Did you not know that?
No, I had no idea.
Yeah, we went yesterday.
And so is it easy for you to be out and about in Vegas or no?
Yeah, we just like, we just go in the back way.
And I had my band there.
And the kids were there.
And they're friends.
And it was cute.
What do you want your fans to know about Vegas
and coming to see you in Vegas?
I just want them to know that they
make the whole thing amazing.
Like, having the fans that I have,
I don't know if anybody else can understand how it is.
But they've been here for me since the beginning
of my career, some of them.
So it's major.
Which song, every single night that you perform in Vegas,
do you still get kind of chills, excited, thrilled to sing?
I will say, OK, so I did my show two nights ago.
At the end, it's a bunch of ballads,
but, like, upbeat ballads.
When We Belong Together came on, the audience went crazy
and just were, like, uproarious.
Yeah.
And it was kind of amazing because, you know,
I don't expect it anymore with that, you know what I mean?
It's like it's been out for a while.
So it was really nice to see how they really just
got so intense with that song.
So I love Christmas.
And you're the queen of Christmas.
You're going to be on a new Christmas tour.
Yes.
Which is so fabulous.
You really bring the world together.
Like, you're doing the work.
How excited do you get back on the road
and do these big, big, big shows across the country?
It's really fun.
I mean, I can't wait to get out there
and do the Christmas show.
It's a whole different experience.
It really is.
It's just like the, you feel like,
it's, like, heartwarming to be on stage and singing
Christmas songs to that crowd, you know?
But the gowns.
The gowns.
Yes.
The Christmas, like, the festivuses.
You know?
The glamour.
Glamour at Christmas is even better, you know?
It's glamour with an edge.
The Christmas frosty edge.
Do you ever feel pressure now that we depend on you
solely for our holiday cheer?
I live for holiday cheer, in case you didn't know.
Yeah.
And I love it if someone tells, you're telling me
you're making me happy.
OK, great.
No, we depend on you.
Well, thank you, Queen of Christmas.
Justice for Mariah and her low-rise jeans.
And congrats, and we'll see you at the show.
See you at the show.
It's always good to see you.
You never age.
It's so crazy.
And neither do you, Charlie.
You're exactly the same.
I just adore you.
Thank you so much for making time for us.
