Hello.
From the memory of Ginko, I welcome you.
A window on traditional Chinese culture.
Ancient stories and their profound wisdom
to offer inspiration to both children and adults.
An invitation for a journey towards authenticity,
goodness and tolerance.
In search of the true self, 9th part.
Sailing beyond pride.
We left Ulysse at type 3 of the Enneagram
almost completely destroyed.
There was nothing left of his ship and his crew
and he himself was caught up in life
by a thread on a fortune raft
recovered from the wreckage of his boat
moving away from the Caribbean whirlwind
and lost in the high seas.
He has mistaken himself for his own abilities
and along the way he has deceived his men
such is the result of such blindness.
Now, Ulysse has been sailing for 9 days
until he falls on the island of Ojiji.
Until then, the dangers have meant
meeting the 7 sins of the soul
laziness, type 9
lust, type 8
greed, type 7
fear, type 6
greed, type 5
envy, type 4
and deception, type 3.
We come to the last two types of personality
and in the Odyssey we learn in book 1
that Ulysse has been stuck on the island of Ojiji
of Calypso for 7 years.
In short, of all the dangers
it is the most important delay
during his journey to the destination of Ithaca
suggesting that the episode of Calypso
represents the most serious of sins.
But how is that?
The most deadly sin of all.
Let us remember,
the self-image of type 2 is
I help.
And their fundamental desire is to feel love
and to be a loving person.
But their deadly sin,
still often hidden even to themselves,
is pride.
This couple of love-pride is surprising,
but it comes from the fact that
in their desire to help others,
the two often develop a feeling of superiority
over what they help.
But if it were not my help,
you would be in such a mess.
In addition,
while wanting to help others,
they can deny themselves need for help.
This denial can, in a deleterious way,
then create exactly the opposite effect
of love that type 2 seeks.
But to come back to the question,
but how is that?
In what pride is the most deadly sin?
We must examine a number of factors.
Firstly, this pride can be the equivalent
of Ibris for the Greeks.
It has always been considered
as the worst of all sins.
Lucifer fell from the sky
because of his pride.
Secondly, this idea is reinforced
by the examination of the etymologies
of Ogygy and Calypso.
Ogygy means something like primitive
or at the very beginning of dawn.
As a result,
Ulysses somehow lands on the root
and the most primary sin
that humans practice, largely.
It is therefore not surprising
that it takes him about 7 years
to escape this peril.
And note the magical number 7,
the number of perfection, of completion.
God rested on the seventh day
and sanctified his rest.
So it is only in the seventh year
that Ulysses can recover
from the effects of this deadly sin.
Thirdly, the word Calypso
or Calypto
means, according to Michael J. Goldberg,
hidden.
And Apocalypse
means a revelation.
So it means something like
hiding a revelation.
Another translation speaks of
the one that hides.
In the previous articles,
we talked about certain types
produced by problems
of the body or of the mind.
Clearly, this hidden or hidden
is in the heart.
The type of 2,
like the type of 3 and 4,
are types of the heart of the enneagram.
And one of the consequences
of this is a concern
concerning the image
and therefore concerning the concealment
in the heart
of what is really happening.
However,
the fact of saying all this
still leads to a big problem
to understand.
To know how to be loved by Calypso
is such a bad thing?
Isn't love good?
What happened?
Calypso and his proposition of love.
With Ulysses arriving on Ogygia,
Calypso,
the dangerous nymph with shiny braids,
an immortal goddess,
falls in love
and wishes to marry her.
As Ulysses says,
she loves me.
She loves him so much
that if Ulysses accepts
his marriage proposal,
she will also make him
an immortal.
Moreover,
even without marriage,
she meets all Ulysses' needs,
including sleeping with him
like lovers.
Ulysses even admits
that his own wife, Penelope,
is well below you,
your beauty,
your stature.
But the reality is
that he didn't have a choice.
She was a reluctant lover
and she was just too willing.
And that's how,
for seven years,
Ulysses spent his days
sitting on rocks and beaches,
his heart torn by blood,
moans and anguish,
looking at the sterile sea
through the tears that blind him.
He can't leave her,
she won't let him.
And there are no more
clean resources,
no crew,
no boat,
no way to return to Ithaca,
so he is stuck.
For our spirits
and our Western culture,
it seems almost too beautiful
to be true.
A beautiful and immortal goddess
wants to take care of you
and love you forever.
How can a man of action like Ulysses
really want to leave?
But just like this,
for the West,
seems to be a good thing,
the reason that it is not
affects one of the most serious addictions
that affect our culture,
namely,
addiction.
As James Hollis says,
children are supposed to leave.
If they didn't,
it would mean
that you didn't manage
to give them the means to act,
to ask them to develop
the necessary resources
to lead their lives without you.
We may miss them,
but if we cling to it,
we don't love them,
we reveal our own addictions.
It's the trap of type 2.
I help and I am a loving person
just means
you need me
and you can't do without me,
I have become
essential to your life.
And the organ infiltrates,
because in such a situation,
there is always the feeling
that because you need me,
then I am superior to you.
The help of other gods.
As Hollis also observes,
the gods want us to grow,
to elevate ourselves
to this high vocation
that each soul carries
as its destiny.
This is what it really means
to live,
as opposed to being
in a space of immortal play
where actions seem
without consequence.
Thus,
at the advice of the gods,
Zeus listens to the voice
of his daughter, Athena,
goddess of wisdom
and protector of Ulysses,
and sends Hermes
to ask Calypso
to free Ulysses.
It is not a coincidence
that it was the god Hermes
who was sent
to free Ulysses
from the hand of Calypso.
We have already met him
on the island of Circe,
where Ulysses had been held
for a year
by another goddess,
and where his know-how
had saved Ulysses
from the Russians of Circe.
Now,
it is still he
who will unlock
the fate of Ulysses.
Because let us remember
that Hermes
is the discoverer of secrets.
His name tells us
that things can be
hermetically sealed,
or that hermeneutics
means precisely
the art of interpreting
what is subtle,
obscure,
mysterious and difficult.
What is hidden,
concealed
in the heart of Calypso
must now be revealed.
Of course,
Calypso is not very happy about it.
His plans for Ulysses
are about to be canceled,
and all the real desires
of his heart are revealed,
namely that all his love
for Ulysses
is actually
more a love of herself,
keeping Ulysses
for herself,
and in a very precise way,
as the text reveals,
wanting to be superior
to Penelope,
Ulysses' own soul.
In this way,
what she is trying to do
can potentially
counteract
the will of the gods themselves.
At first,
she is very angry.
She blames the gods,
qualifies them as cruel,
jealous
and points out
their deep hypocrisy,
because it was Zeus himself
who destroyed his ship,
destroyed his crew
and let it go,
abandoned at sea.
And she is right.
This is what type 2
is very good at
to discern
the intentions
of the hearts of others
and also their
internal contradictions.
It is she,
as she reminds Hermes,
who warmly welcomed her,
cherished her
and swore
to give her immortality.
At this moment,
however,
she realizes
that she said
as much as she is wise
to say,
because there is no way
for another god
to counteract the will,
to take Zeus by assault.
She therefore agrees
to let Ulysses go
and,
in the translation
of Walter Shearing,
points out
that she will help him
without hiding.
No more role play.
Her intentions
will be true
and unmasked
because she will now
really help Ulysses.
It is all the more necessary
that Ulysses is justly
wary of her motivations
when she informs him
that she will help him
to leave.
He had seven years
of his seductive,
eternal attempt
to entice
his heart
with soft
and seductive words
and erase
all thought
of his mind.
These are the worst
aspects of both,
flattery
and manipulation.
But now
she said frankly,
Everything I have
in mind
and that I imagine
for you
are the plans
that I would make
for myself
if I were
in your situation.
I am all compassion.
This is the type
of Zeus
at his best.
Now she really
helps Ulysses,
not building
the ship for him,
thus favoring
the dependence
on his regard
that he has experienced
over these seven
long years,
but allowing him
to build it
for himself.
Surprisingly,
one of his presences
at this moment
is a double-edged
two-edged.
It seems to symbolize
the effect
of the two
in anyone's life.
They can cut
in two ways,
for good,
I am compassion
myself,
and for evil,
the co-dependence
and the annoyance
that results from it.
Calypso can heal,
but it can also
fall into the trap.
Thus,
when you deal
with a two,
you must clarify
what is really
essential in your life,
what is your
real mission.
You must keep
your head clear.
Athena's wisdom
is always in the mind,
and you must not
be distracted,
even if the offer
is targeted
and personalized
for your personal needs.
In this way,
you can sail far
and reach
the high destiny
of your hero
or the call
of your heroine
to find Ritak
and your own soul.
And for a two,
Calypso herself,
she is saved
from her pride
and her hybris
when she listens
to the messenger god
who helps her
to reinterpret
what is really happening.
Concerning the order
of the cosmos,
which is the will
of Zeus,
so that she can
retreat,
be straight
and contribute
without manipulation.
In this way,
she prevents
herself from
the revenge of Zeus
who,
according to Hermes,
will make your life
a hell.
This acceptance
of Hermes' words
is a form of humility
and an antidote
to the pride of the two.
In this series,
in several parts,
in search of the true self,
we will discuss
the nine types
of personalities,
their flaws
and show
how Ulysses,
through his adventures,
overcame them
to find his way
back.
