Part of the eastbound Schuylkill Expressway (I-76) in Philadelphia will be shut down over the course of four upcoming weekends for bridge deck repairs.
now at Four Construction headaches are
expected on one of the area's busiest
highways pendot says drivers should
prepare for lane closures on 76
eastbound over the next four weekends
Thursday afternoon I'm Sarah Bloomquist
and I'm Brian Taff the big story on AC
news today is the project that will
impact traffic in a whole big section of
the city pendot says the closur are
needed for bridge deck repairs action
news reporter Charles Watson is live for
us now in gry's Ferry tonight with the
dates and the detours that drive need to
know
Charles yeah hey Brian and Sarah the
closures will span over four weekends
pendot says drivers could see signage
are learning them to the work in
alternate routes as soon as today
because they expect this project will
cause lots of
congestion buckle up I think that's like
going to cause a lot of chaos because
delays are coming for drivers who use
this stretch of i76 near South
Philadelphia and University City I need
some repairs uh to the bridge back and
to the riding surface Pinot spokesperson
Brad Rudolph says the work will take
place along eastbound i76 between the
grace fairy University City exit and the
34th Street on ramp the project will
among other things focus on road
resurfacing to help reduce things like
cracks and potholes on both the i76 land
and River bridges to get the work done
Pinot says it will institute lane
closures over four weekends beginning on
September 21st in most cases all of the
closures will begin Friday at 9:00 p.m.
and will run through the start of Rush
Hour the following Monday but with an
estimated 38,000 drivers who use each
Bridge daily pendot says expect delays
we strongly advise uh that motorists
avoid the closure area and the surfice
streets in the vicinity of the work area
instead Pinot is urging local drivers to
get off at exit 346c and use the
University Avenue Bridge to get back on
at the 34th Street on ramp it's already
crazy right there too so let's say to
get off right there is you know what I'm
saying like like what I'm about to do
drivers we spoke to say the alternate
route is already a nightmare with a
previous construction project already
underway but they say they'd rather
endure little traffic than bridges in
need of repair with construction what
could you do you know what I mean you're
going to you got to deal with it if it's
something that's got to be done you
don't want bridges
falling yeah and so pendot says the time
table of these closures could change
depending on how quickly they get the
work done and sporting events namely
with the Philly schedule will look like
heading into the postseason we've got
the full list of closures dates and
times over at 6abc.com for now we're
live in Grace Ferry Charles Watson
Channel 6 Action News Sarah yeah the
skook will never fun this is going to
make it a bit worse thank you Charles
