Another castle in the Spiš region is Hrad Ľubovňa 🏰. Built at the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries, with the first written mention in 1311. The castle was intended to defend the northern border of the Kingdom of Hungary and protect an important trade route leading through the Poprad River valley to Poland. Initially a part of the Kingdom of Hungary, it was later transferred to Polish control as a pledge, and between 1655 and 1661, the Polish Crown Jewels were stored there during the Swedish Deluge. In the 18th century, the castle returned to Hungarian hands, but it gradually fell into disrepair as it lost its strategic importance.
