Goldberg Variations, BWV 988, is a keyboard composition by Johann Sebastian Bach consisting of an aria and a set of 30 variations. First published in 1741, it is named after Johann Gottlieb Goldberg, who may have been the work's first performer.

Rather unusually for Bach's works, the Goldberg Variations were published during his lifetime, in 1741.

Nineteen copies of the first edition have survived to the present day. The most valuable of these is the handexemplar (Bach's personal copy of the published score). It was discovered in Strasbourg in 1974 by the French musicologist Olivier Alain and is now in the Bibliothèque nationale de France, Paris.
