The word "hutong" is actually a transliteration from Mongolian, a term that has been in use since 1267 and has a history of over 700 years. As a product with a long history, hutongs naturally represent the historical style of Beijing. In Beijing, there is one hutong that embodies the most artistic vibe, combining tranquility, culture, creativity, and a touch of freshness. This mysterious hutong is Wudaoying Hutong.
Wudaoying belongs to Chongjiaofang and was formerly known as Wudewei Ying. It is a street that has existed since the Yongle Emperor Zhu Di established Beijing as the capital during the Ming Dynasty. It is said that this place was a barracks for the city guards in the Ming Dynasty. During the Qing Dynasty, it was renamed "Wudaoying," and in 1965, during the reorganization of place names, it was renamed "Wudaoying Hutong."
Wudaoying Hutong is an east-west oriented hutong, starting from Yonghegong Street in the east and connecting to Andingmen Inner Street in the west. It is connected to Jianchang Hutong in the south. The hutong is 632 meters long, 6 meters wide, with a total of 69 courtyards. Exiting from Exit D of Yonghegong Lama Temple Station on Metro Line 5, you can immediately see it. It's the perfect place to rest and feel the peaceful and serene atmosphere after visiting the Yonghegong Lama Temple. At first glance, it might remind you of Nanluoguxiang, but walking through it reveals significant differences. Wudaoying is quieter and more artistic.
With Yonghegong (Lama Temple) in front, Andingmen at the back, and Ditan Park not far away, this short 632-meter street is home to many unique small shops and exotic restaurants, most of which haven't fallen into the routines of popular internet-famous spots and remain fresh with each visit. It is quieter than Nanluoguxiang and has more local charm than Gulou. Wudaoying Hutong is a must-visit hutong in the imperial capital.
