From July 2 to 6, Chinese leader Xi Jinping attended the 24th Summit of the Council of Heads of State of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in Astana, Kazakhstan. He then made state visits to Kazakhstan and Tajikistan at the invitation of their presidents.
Established in 2001, the SCO includes founding members China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. India and Pakistan joined in 2017, and Iran in 2023.
In September 2022, Xi chose Kazakhstan as his first overseas destination since the COVID-19 pandemic. He visited Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan while attending an SCO summit hosted by Uzbekistan.
