The singer of this piece is Grammy-award winning baritone John Brancy.

For this episode, portraying the life and adventures of Saint Birgitta (aka Saint Bridget), the challenge was to compose something suitable for a 14th century setting, fitting for portraying how Saint Birgitta experienced Jesus speaking to her in her first vision (later named ”The Calling”.) The sacred music of the 14th century was mostly monophonic, consisting of a single melodic line without any harmonic accompaniment, but there was also the development of polyphony, where multiple independent melody lines were sung simultaneously. Still I chose to be inspired by Vivaldi’s sacred music for this piece. Although Vivaldi lived at a much later time, I think that the maturity of the baroque style of music reflects the pinnacle of Western music, and could perhaps be thought to be closest to God and the Divine. I feel intensely touched by Vivaldis’ sacred music, and that ”the matter” in his sacred works pulls ones soul towards the Divine.
The lyrics in the piece ”The Calling” is an arrangement from what was written down by Saint Birgittas secretary in her collected works, ”Revelationes Coelestes" (meaning ”Heavenly Revelations”).

This piece is part of the soundtrack for the documentary drama ”Divine Messengers”, from the episode ”A Saint of Sorrows”. You can watch the whole episode on Epoch TV.
