The good old-fashioned Subway series has gone underway in 2024, and we got big beef going on.
Not with the players, necessarily, not a battle between Garrett Cole and his weight, no no no,
but with the announcers, particularly the New York Yankees announcer Michael Kay against the
New York Mets announcers. So welcome, and if you're not subscribed to this channel yet,
don't worry about doing so, I'll earn your subscription by the end of this video,
just like Michael Kay has earned the respect he's gotten as a broadcaster, because to start,
is an incredibly respected broadcaster, and has been for many years. He's been in the business
pretty much his entire life, and began being the play-by-play guy for the Yankees all the way back
in 1992. So he's become the pretty clear voice of the Yankees, at least a top one, next to John
Sterling, who just recently retired the radio voice. He's been through a lot of iconic Yankees
teams, was the announcer for Derek Jeter's entire career, has been behind some big Aaron Judge calls,
etc. You get the point. He's had a very notable and successful career that's earned him his respect,
not just from people in New York, but around the entire country. With that said, Michael Kay also
may very well go down as one of if not the most insecure and petty announcers in baseball after
the act he just put on. An act that his own people, his own co-hosts, weren't even on the
sign-up. He had his own guys against him and what he was saying, but we'll get to that in a bit.
Our story begins with the context of the Michael Kay Show, a show Michael Kay has every week from
3pm to 7pm. I've actually never listened to any of his shows, I don't know that much of what he
talks about, obviously I'm sure baseball and other things, but this show in particular is sponsored
by several different companies, with one of them being SNY. For those not aware, SNY, which stands
for Sportsnet New York, is the official network for Mets games. The YES Network, aka the Yankee
Entertainment and Sports Network, is what covers the Yankees, where Kay calls Yankee games on.
So despite SNY being a Mets program, they actually are a sponsor of the Michael Kay Show. I guess
they feel it's a good show to promote their brand on, Kay and his guys get paid for it, and whatever,
it's all good. But in a recent show, SNY had an ad, and in that ad it said,
enjoy the Subway series with the best booth in baseball. Of course, referring to the Mets
broadcast booth. Michael Kay was not having it. I mean, you might as well have told him that his
wife was ugly or something. He had full on steam coming out of his ears.
It could be my bosses. It could be an advertiser. It could be the listening audience.
But, you know, we appreciate every single one of the people that spend their money to advertise
on the show. And SNY is one of those people. So, you know, the game's on YES tonight, and the game
is on SNY. So the way it breaks down is Mets fans usually watch on SNY, and Yankee fans will watch
on YES. But their ad, which ran during the last break, enjoy the Subway series with the best booth
in baseball. I mean, do you expect me to just take that line down? I think our booth is the best
booth in baseball. What do you want them to say? Well, I mean, but you know who the host of the
show is. One of the hosts of the show is. You're going to put that, I'm supposed to sit there and
take it laying down? I'll take O'Neal and Cohn and me over Garon and Keith. I would. I mean,
they're great, but so is our booth. So, I mean, the way you want people to watch is to say join
the best booth in baseball. I'm sorry. I think we're the best booth in baseball. This is a 63
year old man, by the way, 63 years old, yet he couldn't be acting any more like a teenager.
This is literally a classic case of petty jealousy with no true reason to be that petty,
other than you not getting flowers 24 7. If you took this statement from Michael K and switched
up a couple of words, he would actually sound like some exaggerated high school girl beef.
Like it's almost too immature and petty to be normal in that situation. It's so bizarre and
unnecessary at the end of the day, to the point where his own guys start to chime in to combat
what he's saying. No, well, then now that you just had your retort, but I, I, I'm surprised
that you're upset that they would say that. Why go that route? Wait, wait, but this is odd.
What a bizarro take this is. How is it bizarro? It's their thing. It's, it's when people are
promoting themselves, they say the number one blank. You know, sometimes when people say number
one, I don't know if you know this, they're not always telling the truth, right? They're just
saying it's they're, they're promoting themselves. Oh, I, I, I understand everything you're saying,
but you can't expect me to just take that and go, okay, that's true. No, it's not. Oh yes. Oh yes.
You mean to have you read it? No, it wasn't. I wouldn't read it if it was a read, but it was
a commercial during the stop set. I get it. I mean, best book. I mean, I guess they're believing
their own hype. Good, good, great. My fans love them. I get it, but I'll keep our booth out of
anybody's. All right. Well, as you should feel that way, you should feel that way,
but they should feel their way. You'd be shocked if they didn't feel, I think they should feel
that way. And I feel that way, but you also have to be somewhat, I don't know, out of a,
a mindset of being completely clueless to run that on the Michael K show.
Brother, they are quite literally paying you to run ads on your show. It's not like SNY is
promoting themselves, having the best booth in baseball for free. You're getting money for it.
And also who cares if SNY calls themselves the best broadcast booth? Of course, they're going
to say that, which he knows. So what's the issue? And he's so upset that they played it during a
show. Well, the entire point of an advertisement for anybody is to promote themselves and say that
they're the best. I get, maybe it's quote unquote disrespectful because they're running an ad like
that on K's show. But again, it's simple advertising. What is K afraid every listener
is going to jump off and head over to SNY now and never watch him again? What does SNY sucking
themselves off have any impact on anything? Imagine a bookstore owner walks up to you and
says his bookstore is the best. That's nothing groundbreaking. Great. It's actually bad promoting
to just say that. Adolf Hitler would have told you he was a great man. That tells you everything
right there. If anything, Michael K should be happy with the Met's lame promotion. And if he
really has an issue with it, don't have them as a sponsor. That's an option. If it really meant
this much to you, you'd happily sacrifice the money. That's not like they have it with Eben
and Tiki. Yeah, let me ask you this. Let's hear you. Because I want to get in trouble with you,
Mike. Hold your hand right to face the gallows. Okay. Who's being silly? What do you mean?
Is it our sales department or is it SNY? I mean, SNY puts a spot together and they're
paying the money. They want to put their best foot forward. Sounds like if you have a problem
with anybody, it would be the people. No, no, no, no, no. Listen, you take the money,
but I think just what's the issue? My issue is why would you run that ad during this show?
Well, why wouldn't you? Because it's a very popular show and they want to be able to promote
their product on a very popular show. You can have me sit back and go on. That's I don't think
that's true. He's acting like some Muslim company sponsorship said their religion is the best on a
Christian theme show. We're talking about baseball teams and baseball broadcasters here. It's not
that fundamentally deep. People who listen to Michael K will still prefer the Yankees. You
still get your money. The Mets get to promote themselves. Everyone wins. And if you want to
take an objective route to this, not that it is objective, but based on polls by fans, awful
announcing.com put out a poll last year that had the Mets at number two based on most like broadcast
and the Yankees were all the way down at number 24. Do with that information what you will,
but that's what the poll said. The Mets are a very popular broadcast among their fans, especially,
but also just in general. I rarely see anybody criticizing it. The claim in the ad is not based
on that poll, but this whole thing is just dumb. The, the, the crazier part was back in the day,
there was a time, not back in the day, in, in somewhat recent past, they wanted it to be a read
on our show. Now that's a bridge to fall. I mean, I wouldn't mind if you were Don read it and I
would rebut it the same way I'm rebutting it now. But the point is, is that they put a commercial
together and in that commercial, they're going to promote their product and they're going to
be proud of the product that they promote. So why shouldn't they say best booth in baseball?
We air it. You don't have a problem with us airing it because we like their money
and then you get a chance to retort. So what's the issue? There was no issue, but I retorted,
but, but does, does, does it make sense for them to have the host of the show? Retort what they
said? And I'm a big fan of Gary, Ron and Keith. I think they do a great job, but to say best booth
in baseball, when one of the hosts of the show that you're running it on is in the other booth.
But would you rather them not promote it on this show than they be doing themselves a disservice
at us? No, I don't, I don't care. I'm just saying I care that when somebody says that I don't
believe it. You don't care, but you care. Makes sense. Although those two co-hosts didn't agree
with Kay's complaints, Paul O'Neill, one of the commentators on the yes booth with Kay did agree,
apparently texting him after he heard the ad saying that he couldn't believe they ran it.
And when Gary Cohen and the Mets guys were asked about it, they declined to respond. Now,
is it strange to have a pro Mets booth ad on a show hosted by the play-by-play guy for the Yankees?
Yeah, sure. But he signed up for that. It's not personal. He's getting paid. Again,
the ad in itself isn't going to convert Yankees fans to only listen to SNY now. Who cares?
For someone as established in the industry as he is, Michael Kay does not need to be this insecure
about something so insignificant. He then put out a tweet mocking the claim of the Mets booth being
the best in baseball by calling the rain that delayed the game between the Yankees and Mets
the best rain in baseball. It's so bitter and petty. But to be fair, SNY did also play into
the drama by tweeting this out a couple hours before. So this is actually the one pass I'll
give Kay. But either refuse the money and stop any pro other broadcast ads from running on your show,
or live with it and let companies promote their products. It's not that big of a deal.
Let me know your thoughts. Thank you for watching and I'll see you soon.
