"Give the young man everything but virtue, and you will have done nothing for his happiness." - Plato

"Young people must learn to think; and they never learn it more easily, never more eagerly, than by examples that stimulate their imagination. Without this, the most pithy doctrines are often like unsalted food, at least among the young, who do not like to take the trouble to consider the intrinsic value of even the most exquisite propositions. One must therefore flavour the principles with events, and, like bread, one must cut the thoughts for them so that they learn to think. But only selected thoughts, carefully purified of everything that might be harmful, false or detrimental, and as much as possible only noble thoughts; if one wants to enlighten the mind and form a noble heart in the youth, as every father wishes. ...

The outward appearance of manners:

"Outward propriety is to the body what a healthy mind is to the soul. Accordingly, one should always be modest in small external matters, and observe a certain reverence towards oneself, as it were, which one may never deny if one wants others to deny us the same.

The aforementioned Bacon, who is regarded as one of the greatest minds among philosophers, used to say that reverence for oneself is a bridle for all vices. But he was also a fine example of this beautiful doctrine. For even his enemies found nothing to criticise in him: his whole person was so modest and therefore most agreeable. And as the story of his life tells us, one could only see him in order to be taken in by him and to love him even before one knew his merits."
