Johannes Brahms was a German composer and pianist and one of the leading musicians of the Romantic era. Born in Hamburg, Brahms spent much of his professional life in Vienna, Austria, where he played a leading role in the music scene. In his lifetime, Brahms's popularity and influence were considerable; he is sometimes grouped with Johann Sebastian Bach and Ludwig van Beethoven as one of the Three Bs, after a 19th-century comment by the conductor Hans von Bülow. Brahms composed for piano, chamber ensemble, symphony orchestra, and for voice and chorus. A virtuoso pianist, he premiered many of his own works; he also worked with some of the leading performers of his time, including the pianist Clara Schumann and the violinist Joseph Joachim.
Johannes Brahms wrote his Fantasien, Op. 116 in 1892, and published them the same year. It is a set of seven works for piano solo, all named Capriccio or Intermezzo, and it was premiered in parts in 1893, first in Vienna and then in London.
