The Kinderszenen op. 15 are a cycle of thirteen short piano pieces written by Robert Schumann in 1838.

The scenes describe childhood, but what was childhood like in 1838? Part 1:

The Book of the Housewife from 1880 (3rd edition) introduces the chapter on education as follows: "Above all, respect the white dress (innocence) of childhood" - Greek saying.

"To educate a child means to enable it to fulfil its destiny in life to the best of its possibilities. ... The first stage of education is undoubtedly habit, and it is therefore essential to make the child see good rather than bad habits from the very beginning. ... The first quality to be counteracted, even in the smallest child, is attachment." (Source: The Housewife's Book, ca. 1880 page 355)
