3 Days Camping and Fishing for Spring Trout | Moose Burgers & Mystery River

what's going on guys Noah here with Northern scavenger I'm out here for a 3-day spring fishing trip with my buddy Matt mayfly Matt has been on the channel for a few years now the big one being the agones the 30-day canoe trip through coot n Quebec but you know he's a busy guy it's hard for us to plan a trip these days he's raising a little girl but every year around the same time we get out for an annual spring fishing trip we're going to be eating good food we're going to be doing a little fly fishing and the weather looks absolutely perfect for the next few days join us this is going to be a good [Applause] [Applause] one oh oh my God they're right in front of us just feasting it's absolute pandemonium out there right now we see Stone flies and mayflies but Matt and I are going to opt to go mayfly fishing with a buddy generally you want to start with different types of flies to see what they're biting but we know what they're biting cuz we're seeing them rise right in front of our [Applause] eyes woohoo to the to the okay okay nice oh not on you no but I I was watching that other mayly there we go oh he's there you go oh no CH what's that about pointing the rod well if you get your Rod perpendicular to them there's very little force in the hook set so when you're stripping like that you kind of keep your Rod tip pointed with the line till you hook up and then bring your Rod out to put some Bend in it man every time there we go you're on yeah Net's right behind you there's a mayfly hatch going on and they're they're rising and I couldn't get one to hit my dry fly and as soon as I change to the woolly bugger and started stripping it every cast I'm getting hit okay let's go look at that mayly on my finger TR my hand give him a little gift that's how I release fish these days today we're putting in a bit longer of a day to get beyond the section of this area that we've been before the goal of this trip is to explore new land new Waters and hopefully get on some big Brook troat there it is look at that a little guy but still fun we saw a little blue line leading into this Lake that we had to check out so far we see some moving water and a little bit of troat [Applause] foam oh see that rise up there oh yeah there's a bit of an apron and then it drops off and we're seeing fish roll right on that draw poop there he is nice think our Nets CL up let's go boy that's a slabby one man it's got some heft not a bad fish biggest of the trip so far a Matt definitely it's a solid fish well we might have found a little bit of a honey hole line peeling off a [Music] rod oh no we pull up to this spot not knowing that there's a campsite but it's funny how human behavior is there's good fishing here and there's obvious signs of people camping here way back rusted out Coleman stove old cut marks on the tree people think the same cheers man cheers far into the yeah I was impressed with how like how far we got in a fire band is on so we can't have a fire tonight it's unfortunate but last year there's so many forest fires in Nova Scotia it's good to be extra cautious over this trip we're going to be cooking everything on a stove it's not as romantic to be cooking on a stove but we don't want to burn down the forest that's the number one on the menu for tonight it's moose Burgers but more specifically bacon jalapeno mousse Burgers the mousse is from a mousse that uh me and a couple friends got over in New Finland this past fall so we're going to fry up some bacon first grease the pan with that and then put together all the fixing okay so we're frying the burgers in the grease from the bacon here's one little thing that I've learned when you're cooking with like venison cuz it's so lean normally if I have a beef burger like I like a pretty thick Patty cuz it's got lots of fat in it and it'll hold that moisture with these I like to actually do like a fairly thin burger patty and then cook it hot and fast if you try and do like a mousse or a deer uh Burger thick to get it cooked fully you're going to end up drying it out so doing like a really nice just like 3/4 of an inch thick Patty it'll hold all that moisture it actually I find it makes like a Better Burger in the end cheese Red Onion pickles jalapeno bacon lettuce ketchup wild mous jalapeno bacon burgers in the back country what do you think good burger yeah it's like it's different than beef you can definitely taste that it's different than beef yeah I wouldn't say it's gy has just has like a unique flavor to it yeah like I find when you I don't know this is a weird way to describe it when I when you smell like raw mousse it smells like it's got pepper on it to me for some reason like a little spice to the meat or something it makes such a good burger [Music] all right guys that's a wrap for the day it's probably not even 9:00 but without a fire we're just standing here in the dark another beautiful day tomorrow we're going to be entering this area that we have not explored ever before so it's all going to be new to us hopefully the tro are going to be big hopefully there's going to be a lot of exploring to do we'll see you guys then [Applause] little ice in there it got freezing last night like literally freezing ice forming in our Nile jeans in the water our shoes are ice blocks it is a frosty morning bad trip not to bring gloves you guys might remember how much I struggled with coffee on the winter trip with Tristan and Yan and then I tried another type of instant coffee and it was not that good and we got recommendations from some of you guys that the Starbucks Coffee the Starbucks instant coffee was good so we're going to be trying that this morning via instant house BL have you tried this before oh yeah a bunch of times it's my go-to for stuff like this that's hot yeah that's significantly better than the other instant coffee I've tried yeah I think nothing can really compare to the real fresh to ground coffee but in situations where you need coffee on the go I think this Starbucks coffee is it yeah my feet are warm yeah that worked that worked really well first spot of the day looks pretty good small little creek with an apron flowing into this Pond we find there's a lot of fish this time of year right off the riffle we're already seeing fish rise not bad first fish of the day beautiful fish oh no Matthew's on okay this is this one's going to be a delicate operation ready Y come on in the in the yes yes sir nice fish Matt that's my best of the trip so far early in the day so as nice as he is for the pan I think we'll let this guy go so what the game plan is today is along the map we see a lot of these outflows and inflows on these small little ponds and we're going to slowly work our way up this system fishing all those spots picking them apart seeing what flies are working see if see what the fish are doing and fish hard all day yes sir that's on really nice but said if you want to catch a fish you got to put on a woolly bugger old no let's go not slaying them over there oh no way this is the biggest one of the trip maybe oh wow Matt Matt oh no way oh that's a beautiful fish that is a beautiful fish mat that was the biggest fish in the trip so far I was just squatting on this rock and I just dropped the woolly bugger into the foam right below me and I felt some weight just pulled up and he was right there the entire time I think I heard him yell get back yeah I was yelling your name yeah I'm glad you landed good nice woo oh my goodness look at that another Beauty let's go today we learned something the fish are already up in the shallows in the pools within the riffles every pool had a fish and that's such a fun way to fish you it's it's almost like sightseeing you know you throw your your fly through the the pool and you see a little bit of a Flash and you we set the hook and it's just as good as dry fly fishing to me but in other news this is where we go off the beaten path up to this point we're familiar with and now we're going to be going up this River up to a bunch of still waters up there where we think the fishing is going to be pretty good this is my favorite type of tripping a little bit of exploration and unknown and fishing combined make the perfect trip for me this is awesome got it so this is an erratic I know I talk about erratics all the time in Latin erratic is translated to word meaning to wander glacial activity move these rocks and displace them in different areas so this rock wasn't from here this could have been from hundreds of kilometers away and it just plays precariously here so we're getting on on the day just having a quick lunch break in this beautiful little stretch of water here we're working our way up this water system that we don't know anything about but we found a trail on the side of this first Creek and we're optimistic that it might keep going it's mid-afternoon we could fish here all day we have places to go fish to meet big eagle up there you just drag her up here yeah oh oh I think that's nether dude I can't believe how much how farther up here eh look at that oo that's a beautiful one perfect eating size this one's a little skinny than that [Music] but got one we got some wind coming is there a Portage back there no oh no no Oh you mean like the just Bank her up yeah just like a trail there a trail here but you got to bring a fourwheeler into it oh okay carried up the fourwheeler get the other L yeah yeah just smash that man monsters yeah away we ain't lying like the rest of we coming in like there's no fly on they not fighting we like b b how long have you guys been here for uh since Thursday oh nice set up T man go for a rip right on I just got a nice one they I think the air mat was tied to the Rope don't have a boat back here they push me out there big one H weap all in whatever man that's what you're cleaning your baby TR 17 and 12 inch guys do you guys are more than walk going to have a beer or Rum or the bottom of this Lake we just ran to a bunch of guys they pulled us in we just had a couple beers they've been drinking all day and Matt and I both they kept feeding us beers they gave us a beer to go uh we're both pretty buzzed pretty pretty funny encounter great guys just out here looking for a good time all right it's getting late in the day and it's getting cold and we're looking for a spot to camp so far camping is a little rough here a little wet and muddy going to keep going our options are running sleep we got to Camp decent spot we're a little worried there getting close to the end if we were going to find a spot that wasn't windy or muddy but this spot will do we got a nice little pool here to fish later we got a couple fish for dinner things are looking good we have about an hour left of sunlight so we're going to do our chores and get things going before it gets too dark see what's in his belly see what these guys are eating the last one was all ctis flva and looks like the same here okay so this is our bread there was no air when I put this away so it's definitely done something and you can kind of see like all this bubbling we're going to try and make a little bit of bread for supper tonight this is a mix of flour salt garlic powder and a little bit of Italian herb and yeast I'm going to mix a little bit of warm water in with it now mix it all up and then throw out the day in the bear Barrel hopefully it'll rise a little bit trying to stretch it into like a flat bread yeah this stove is very difficult to cook on yeah okay let's go oh that's a good idea here thanks Marl and Co all her done yeah so we'll throw a little trout up on there folder in half that is good that is a different texture than banic it is actually a little lighter yeah all right guys that's a fullon day awesome day we did so much stuff lots of great fishing today got to a great spot tomorrow is a big unknown we're taking essentially a a marsh back to our car on a map it does look like there is a passage but there's going to be a lot of dragging and potentially a lot of unknowns so we're going to go to bed pretty early tonight get up early have a full day on the water tomorrow see you then it seems crazy that there is a fire band cuz it's so cold Nova Scotia got a lot of forest fire activity last year and there's a lot of people out there just doing Burns in in bad times and because of that they got to lay these laws on the general public and that leads to us out here not having a fire [Music] today is going to be a little different part of the deal with this trip is we're trying to connect a loop to make that possible we're taking a gamble on today we need to cross a stretch of wilderness that has no significant waterways or portages this is the quickest way back to our car if all goes well we should be out tonight if not Matt's going to have an angry baby at [Music] home so it looks like we're going to have our work cut out for us a lot of these Creeks are just too bouldery to paddle so we're portaging and walking the boat through these sections and it's pretty much going to be blue line small pond Blue Line small pond Blue Line small pond for the foreseeable future until we get to the unknown section which is just a lot of nothing so just going keep plugging away it's early do it go up and around that way nice oh road down here we saw something in the woods up [Music] ahead any dead bodies not so far doesn't feel like terribly well used oh somebody was here two days ago people come smoke cigarettes and read the log book here please leave Camp as you found it or better for everyone to enjoy so it's one of those public use public use cins we just got to the mystery section and we quickly learned that it's not much of a mystery it's just a 600 met Portage uh and the Portage is a bushwack like the droplets of water erode the stone so too will we erode this Portage with time and persistence real muddy a little over half really yeah where are we going there wow yeah we just banged out over half of it and we started right there yeah look at us eh there's sections Within the Woods where a couple trees have fallen and there's been a lot of new growth and between the deadall and the new growth those sections suck but the trees that are actual still like the main trees that are still standing the under story is not too bad and you kind of just pinball your way through [Music] let's go oh an old boat there's an old boat here yeah I know I saw that what the is this doing here oh my God lunch time yeah has big slices of meat we have in here oh yeah count them up does it say on there how many slices am I going to get a bunch of pickled juice if I just don't yeah you will don't do that so don't do that at first there an entire ghost worth of cheese in here [Laughter] [Music] p [Music] [Music] it's sort of it's like this it just keeps going so there's going to okay well we should probably just go straight through that there's going to be some through here [Music] yeah yes [Music] sir that was an early but we made it to the ATV trail the Trip's not done yet we still have about a 2 km Portage but it's on this Trail we're not going to be bushwacking it's going to be put your head down and go but damn I guess that's why no one does this Loop hey Mt you think that's why no one does this loop I think that's why that's accurate we made it what a Portage heavy day you know we don't necessarily plan a trip to do a lot of bushwacking like that but we really wanted to connect this Loop it makes it logistically more simple and it got us to some really good brook trout so it's always worth it guys thank you so much for watching if you guys enjoy the
