good morning everyone happy Monday
welcome back to my allotment Diaries my
name is Emma the the allotment Diaries
if you're not already subscribed to my
YouTube channel as always I would love
you to hit the Subscribe button um we
are getting close to 34,000 subscribers
which is insane when I started I think I
had well I had none um but I had about a
th subscribers when I started doing
allotment videos so
it's quite a big jump and it's amazing
to see so many people enjoying my
alotment garden and my lotman content as
well because I love allotment plots I
love allotment gardening I'm so
passionate about it and I just want to
share it with as many people as I can so
thank you so much if you've already
subscribed it means the world to me it's
actually quite um a lovely day on the
allotment plot all the bunting up and
everything looks like it's growing I'm
Stein's already out and singing away um
the only thing that's not that nice is
the weather I am wearing three layers so
I've got two Jumpers in a t-shirt I've
got two leggings on two pairs of socks
my big thick Wellies and my coat on
because the weather is just absolutely
awful like where is Spring I feel like
spring has just disappeared like we've
seen little glimpses of it but then it's
just not been consistent at all I think
actually when you're watching this the
weather should be better but I'm filming
it the week before I'm filming it last
week and it's
cold it's not the quietest day on the
alotment I'm sure you can can hear all
the power tools going off but that's
okay we can cope um as you can see the
plot is looking very much alive very
nice very beautiful the bunting the
bunting has just completely changed the
plot I feel like it looks alive now
looks like we got stuff going on yeah
it's looking good I'm pretty sure all
that sound in the background is them
cutting the the grass in the park and
we've got a park next to the allotments
and I think they're cut in the grass I
think that's what it is so it shouldn't
be too long um you'll be happy to know
maybe
maybe you won't care I don't know that
all of my brassers have survived and
they are alive I think I have just done
a much better job at protecting them
this time round and also they are bigger
plants so even if they were to get some
damage I don't think it would kill them
because they are a little bit more
substantial but yeah they're all doing
really really well the netting as well
has made a difference it goes all the
way down to the ground um so it really
it really hasn't left any openings at
all for bird attack or anything and yeah
I just think it's just doing really well
I've also I've used um slugas on this
not strch and I think that's made a
difference as well can you hear me it
really is not a peaceful day today um
but yeah I've used slugas instead of
strch and I think it's worked better
than strch actually and that's unusual
for me to say cuz you know how much I
love my strch but I really think slugas
has worked more broad beans are doing
really well as well they they are alive
and they are getting taller and that is
excellent I have planted some more beans
in between where the gaps are and the
gaps are just where the slugs have
actually got to them again I've used
stro on this and I've actually had quite
a bit of slug damage not as much as like
it hasn't destroyed the whole crop but
some of them are dead so this is a
predominantly stro bed I have got some
brambles in here as well which has
worked a bit I think I assume but you
can see even the healthy ones oh even
the healthier looking ones have got some
slug damage on um and as opposed to like
the brassicas which have got absolutely
none and that one's dead that one's sort
of dying that one's dead I have planted
more beans in between but they are alive
and they are getting bigger and that is
good this here is a salad bed that I
planted out with you a little while ago
now granted it was very early in the
year I did have to cover it with fleece
I sort of said to you I think it'll be
okay because it was only things like
radishes lettuce um and spring onions
that we were sort putting in here well
unfortunately nothing's come up I mean
this row has I think this is uh spinach
or something or lettuce something like
that I can't actually remember what it
was this row come up okay um but these
rows see I got the little sticks in
place you might not be able to see that
very clearly but I do have little sticks
to see where I put the rose in but I
can't see anything at all coming up in 1
2 3 four rows here I think it was
clangula spring onion and radishes don't
really know what happened to be honest I
would have expected to see even like two
or three germinate you know but there
was nothing NADA dead dead as a donut so
I have brought some more seeds with me
today I thought we' just REO it maybe it
was just too early in the year maybe I
was just being a little bit ambitious I
don't know I've rewn the carrots last
time so we're going to REO spring
onions some of the red
lettuce and radishes as well so let's do
that just sew it again for
[Music]

communicate with him
[Music]
[Music]
I am surprised that the radishes and the
spring onions did not germinate at all
um cuz they are so easy to grow like you
can drop a packet of radishes and it
will grow into a radish you could drop a
packet like on your bed and they would
probably Sprout into radish is like
that's how easy they are it makes me
think that maybe what happened is that
they dried out because this bed's been
mulched over with some uh cardboard and
then compost on the top but it hasn't
rotted down like the cardboards taken a
while to rot down I reckon they might
have dried out and I didn't water them
enough because we did I know we had a
lot of rain but the thing is is it
doesn't matter cuz if your seeds dry out
in between the rain showers they're dead
do you know what I mean like it just a
couple of days of like warm sun where I
didn't water them that's enough for a
seed to dry out and die when it's really
tiny so perhaps I just need to water
these more but there we go attempt
number two of the salad bed um these are
all just dead I don't know why the Slugs
aren't eating these cuz they're welcome
to them they really are um but this is
the beauty of this time of year guys you
can just reso stuff anything that you
sewed earlier that didn't work there's
still time just whack it in now
[Music]
[Music]
right I've also brought some more peas
and I thought I would just whack in a
few more um pea seeds is that what
they're called pea seeds that sound why
does that sound so weird pea seeds I
they are just peas they're literally
just dried peas that you put in the
ground they don't feel like seeds but I
guess they are um but the peas are doing
really well so I've got two varieties
here I thought I'd try in succession so
them would be really fancy seeing as um
seeing as they're still alive and
they're still growing I thought I'd push
my luck a little bit why not why not
sometimes you got to just push your luck
a little bit and so the varieties that I
brought with me to sew directly into the
ground are purple Magnolia and green
something green something now I ripped
the label so I can't see what the end of
the label says um it looks like there's
an h e n and then a letter in front of
that so four letters there's four
letters green something green something
h e en Shen Fen Shen I don't know I
don't know that doesn't sound right
though I don't know what Shen would be
but anyway that's um that's a little
cross word clue for you but yeah the
peas are still alive guys I tell you
what no one is ever more surprised than
me to find that my plants are still
alive I cannot believe it and they're
actually doing really well they're
really getting very tall they're loving
this uh this structure so because I've
got some gaps um where the snails did
get to a few of them you can see
particularly down here they seem to like
the ones on the end I thought I'd direct
sew them maybe I'll accidentally
succession s them how fantastic would
that be take my coat off it's cold but I
feel like the coat is making me a bit
bulky it's quite difficult to do fiddly
jobs I don't know why doesn't really
make sense but that's how I feel
right right so we'll just whacka peeing
one of each we'll alternate them oh gosh
that's quite a lot I didn't want that
many yeah look they're just like little
dried shriveled up peas aren't they
weird so we're just sort of going to
stick them in
there
there one in between there
let's try and get those back in the bag
will I get them back in the bag that's
the question no can tell you the answer
the answer is no just go for it oh
everywhere everywhere and then the
purple Magnolia ones oh look they're
actually more purple the peas that is so
strange I don't know why it seems
obvious now we'll just alternate those
ones like
that I'm only putting one in the hole
cuz I'm not expecting anything to grow
I'm not wasting two seeds per
hole go for it no didn't work it's all
right like a challenge

I want to reclaim my shed back guys so
I've done all that work um I still
haven't gone to the dump by the way but
I will I will B that in soon I've done
all the work of kind of cleaning up
everything and kind of like I don't know
just making it less of an absolute dump
site to be honest but the spiders have
officially moved in and I hate it I need
to get rid of them so someone said just
to be brave I've got a couple of um
ideas firstly someone said to keep
disturbing them so I'm going to get a
big stick in a minute and I'm just going
to disturb them all and hopefully
they'll bug her off um but if that
doesn't work someone also said
peppermint so I've got some peppermint
oil that was just going to kind of
scatter around oh God that was
M giant one but the first thing we're
going to do is trying to stir them with
a big stick now I mean a very big stick
because I'm not going near them cuz I am
sick of them I am sick I need to get my
shed back I was thinking this sck it's
big it's robust I think it could stand
up against the spider let's
it got it it on
there what do I do with it it's like a
disgusting candy floss what do I do with
it what do I do with it
[Music]
[Music]
the
webs oh God please don't jump at me
please don't jump at me
oh my God is that
snail the snails in
there oh my God are you sitting in there
please don't sit in there can you please
leave oh please can you just go live
somewhere else please please can you
just live somewhere
else all right we could just never go to
that section of the shed again that's
fine okay that's all right just please
can you just all leave eat them how am I
supposed to do the bit by the door cuz
I'm not going to be able to get out the
shed so I have to do it around the
corner right later this is the bit I
don't want to do cuz I can't see
him
God shed his skin is's massive that
that that ain't
right burn this stick
after oh my God I can't keep
[Applause]
this it's just a stick but not anymore
stressful stressful I just hate them so
much I get so scared but I actually
don't think there's many spiders left in
here I think it's like the webs and
stuff and like old where they shedded
their skin and everything I think
they've moved on I think they've got the
memo but what we're going to do is we're
going to just throw around some
peppermint oil now and hope that really
finishes them off so apparently gosh
that's really strong it's like a proper
essential oil apparently they don't like
the smell of peppermint so I don't know
how to get it around I was just going to
kind of spray like throw it around so
we're just going to do
that is that coming out no it's not
coming out
be
gone be
gone it's like holy water be gone leave
this
place go The Rake keep doing that the
rake go away go away go
away take your essential peppermint oil
go
leave oh my God it's so ridiculous
hey I now declared the shed covered in
peppermint oil so hopefully that gets
rid of a little buggers we'll find out
if anything it just smells nice in there
now actually it doesn't smell nice it
actually smells a bit like sambuka if
you've ever drunk R like a shot of
sambuka actually makes it feel a little
bit drunk being in there can you get
drunk on peppermint oil I don't know
feel a little bit lightheaded that was
an entire bottle was it supposed to be
an entire
bottle yep it smells of sambuka so it's
bringing back all the uh all the early
naughties memories I hope they don't
like sambuka

so one of the ways that people said to
get rid of slugs and snils in your
garden is to lay down wooden boards and
then turn them over in the morning or
whenever you go down there and you'll
find them all and you can kind of
dispose of them and by dispose I mean
um but I'm probably just going to toss
them into the communal path someone also
said they can find their way back home
up to like 20 km that's insane that I
couldn't find my way home within 2 km if
I went the wrong way from my house 2 km
I wouldn't have a clue how to get back
home so the the fact that slugs and
snails can do that is absolutely insane
um but anyway I've got a board here so
I'm going to turn it over and I'm going
to do just that I think it's a great
idea I'm sort of doing it accidentally
do you know what I mean so if I turn
this board
over look at all these
slugs what the hell do I do with them
now I kill them with my bare hands
that's what I'm saying is this a good
slug here I have a feeling that's a good
Slug and what I mean by good slug is
that he eats the other slugs so why is
he not eating the other slugs cuz
there's loads of food for him here
there's loads of food for him but he's
not eating them I'm confused I think
that's his baby be so I'll leave those
two slugs but I think the rest of them
I'm going to just like get rid of in
theory it's a great idea when the
reality comes down and you are literally
picking up slugs and removing them by
hand it just feels a bit different you
know it's like this was a great idea now
I have to actually do it oh my God
there's loads of them they're under the
ground I knew they could live under the
ground I knew they could live under the
ground I had a feeling that they could
like burrow down under the soil that's
impossible then we're doomed that's it
we're doomed as gardeners if they can go
under the ground we're doomed that's
like finding out that mice and rats can
fly you'd be like no that's it we're
doomed they can just fly away there's
nothing we can
do oh God
I can't there's no way I can just murder
all of those in one go that just feels
like um that's just I just I can't do
that I can't like killing a few slugs
with pellets or like I don't know
putting some stro down or stepping on
one is fine but this is a whole group
you know they probably got friendship
group they probably got kids they
probably got you know they go to school
slug school there's no way I can do it I
just can't do it so what I'm going to do
is walk down the path a bit and Chuck
them in here I think for a slug this is
about 20 kmet I reckon for a slug
distance that is a long way for a slug R
now that is a long way if that can find
its way back it can have them seriously
I don't understand how it can go from
there and go oh she's moved us come on
guys this way come all the way down here
what do they use landmarks what are they
how are they directing themselves how
are they using directions I I can't
understand they're amazing animals if
they can do that they're amazing if not
then you know
everyone's just having me on I don't
believe where's their brain how big is
their brain how can they navigate that I
I just don't understand what they're
using the Sun the Stars the tree I can't
understand it guys it's so confusing to
me but apparently they can find their
way back so we'll find out I'll let you
know I'll let you know oh yeah guys I
forgot I brought this it's about to wrap
up and I forgot this is in my bag
cinnamon somebody said that slugs SNS do
not like cinnamon so I'm going to put it
around my daers cuz I don't want to keep
using those pellets and like stro and
everything you know I just want to use
something more natural I know that's all
natural but yeah I think you know what I
mean something like cinnamon just feels
more eco-friendly I could drop a
cinnamon swirl on the ground and it
would keep slugs and snails away that
feels quite natural to me you know
cinnamon swrl you drop it happens it
just happens this is my little daer
growing so we just think some of that oh
my gosh that came out like crazy I did
not expect that much to come out oh my
God all right cool I'm in a second it
rains in a minute that get washed away
but um let's try the cinnamon trick
let's go for it these haven't been
touched yet I don't
think maybe they've been a little bit
munched no they haven't they're fine um
so we'll try cinnamon oh smells
lovely oh smells lovely
one one of my hands smells of peppermint
the other hand now smells of cinnamon I
don't know if that's a good combination
but it's very christmy it's very
christmy on this plot right now that's
all we're going to get done today I
think because I just don't have any
other jobs to do I just wanted to get
down here and Potter about a little bit
next time I'm going to plant out my
second lot of main cro potato I've got
two lots going in and then I've also got
some more earlies left and I'm going to
whack those in as well because
apparently early potato don't mean you
sew them early in the year it's the
length of time it takes for them to grow
and develop so you can start your early
potatoes anytime now I don't know from
when to when but like they just they
develop quickly that's why they're
called earlies uh so that I'm just going
to whack in some more earlies and see
what happens I've never done that before
so that'll be exciting as exciting as
whacking potatoes in in some mud can be
I hope you've enjoyed my Vlog today if
you have subscribe to my channel and I
will see you again on Wednesday have a
lovely gardening week everyone see you
