In July 2023, the South Korean-made F-A-50 and the U.S. Air Force's F-22 Mong-Qin were used in the U.S.-U.S.A. joint exercise against the U.S.-U.S.A.
These two fighters rarely fought fiercely in the air on Lushong Island.
According to reports, the South Korean-made F-A-50 actually defeated the U.S. Air Force's F-22 Mong-Qin in this exercise.
What the hell is going on?
The South Korean-made fighter, the Yi-Jun-Tu-Qi,
in addition to the more familiar KF-21 four-and-a-half fighters,
and the F-A-50, which has defeated the Chinese-made fighter J-10 many times,
has been on display in the international arms market and has grabbed hundreds of orders from Asia and Europe.
Why did the IDF South Korean brother F-A-50 leave its senior Taiwan IDF far behind?
Hello, everyone. Welcome to the New Cold War Situation. I'm Yutong.
We've talked a lot about Taiwan's fighter jets.
Today, let's take a look at South Korea, a neighboring country in Southeast Asia.
The F-A-50 we just talked about shot down an F-22.
Specifically, according to documents from the Philippine Air Force,
a Philippine fighter pilot was simulating an air battle with the F-22 Mong-Qin.
A Philippine fighter pilot confidently announced in the radio that
Fox-2 had shot down a Mong-Qin when it turned right.
This document published a photo of the F-A-50 landing and aiming at the F-22,
and detailed that the F-A-50 imported from South Korea
had achieved unprecedented success in capturing the fifth-generation fighter F-22.
This event marks an important development in military history.
The Philippine fighter first defeated a fifth-generation fighter in a simulated air battle.
Of course, a simulated air battle is just a simulated air battle,
and it's too different from a real battle.
But no matter what, the performance of the F-A-50 is undoubted.
In fact, the F-A-50 fighter jets of the South Korean Air Force T-50 and its extended F-A-50
are hotly contested in the international market,
and have been defeated on the other side many times.
In the international market, they have won big orders for the Xiaolong fighter jets,
and even exported to Poland, Europe.
The later predecessors have long put the senior Taiwan IDF far behind.
Let's take a look at the history of the F-A-50's development.
As early as 1992, South Korea's Samsung Airlines proposed the title
KTX-2's local advanced trainer plane project,
and received sponsorship from the American Rocksteel Martin Company.
In 1995, the appearance of the KTX-2 was announced,
which immediately aroused public opinion among military fans in Taiwan.
The front of the fuselage is integrated into the fuselage,
and the air intake duct on both sides is a single-piece hammer tail,
which is quite similar to the Hanxiang company's IDF Jingguo.
Therefore, in Taiwan, there are nicknames such as Xiaoban IDF Weiguo.
In addition, it is said that some Hanxiang employees went to South Korea after resigning,
which further deepened the saying of Jingguo.
From a certain perspective, the IDF and the KTX-2 do have a brotherly relationship,
but the main reason is not the guidance of Hanxiang employees.
Because the number of Hanxiang employees who went to South Korea is not high,
mainly with the help of the United States.
Because originally, the construction and management of these two fighter jets
are the same company,
but the key is that South Korea does not have such an embarrassing international situation in Taiwan.
KTX-2 was developed in the early days of development,
and the engine of the F-404 propulsion turbine was obtained.
This is the goal that IDF worked hard to achieve in the early days of development,
and it was realized on its brother.
The military thrust of the F-404 is 48.9 kN,
and the rear thrust is 78.7 kN,
which is the most popular mid-thrust engine.
Installed on the US Navy F-A-18 large aircraft carrier,
the Swedish JAS-39AC private rescue fighter,
the performance of the Indian light aircraft carrier is very good.
Even the early version of the French escort aircraft
is also installed on the F-404,
which shows its popularity.
In the early days of development, KTX-2 was not well-received,
because there were many competitors for the international jet trainer,
including the Italian M-346 and the British Eagle, which had not yet finished production.
As a result, KTX-2 met the Asian financial storm in 1997
shortly after its finalization,
and South Korea's economy was severely damaged.
Samsung Airlines, the main manufacturer, could not support it,
and it was suspended for a while.
Fortunately, the South Korean government decided to suspend it,
and agreed to pay 70% of the R&D budget,
and merged Samsung Airlines with KAI,
a major airline in modern aviation,
to overcome the difficulty.
In 2000, KTX-2 was officially named the T-50 elite.
In 2001, the first T-50 left the assembly line.
After the T-50 was mass-produced,
the T-50 armed fighter A-50, which was based on the T-50 in 2011, was also launched.
Later, it was identified as air combat capable,
so it was renamed to F-A-50,
that is, F-A-18,
because of its air combat and ground-to-ground attack capabilities.
The success of F-A-50,
the United States did its best to support it.
As mentioned earlier,
when the Asian financial storm hit,
a few Korean R&D companies were at a loss,
but Roma did not back down.
This is very important.
It gave F-A-50 the motivation to continue its development,
mainly because Roma thought that the US Air Force also needed a jet trainer.
The current T-38 was commissioned in 1961.
It is the oldest aircraft in the US Air Force,
and can be dismantled at any time.
But, as expected,
the US Air Force did not dismantle the T-38,
and launched the new trainer T-X bid in 2017.
The choice was actually Boeing,
not Roma's T-50A.
Although the T-50A did not make the US order,
it still made a lot of money for Roma,
mainly for developing countries with weak economic standards.
Although F-A-50 is not a high-end fifth-generation fighter,
it is enough for countries with limited financial resources.
First of all, it flies faster than the M-346,
British Eagle and other four-engine trainers mentioned earlier,
can reach 1.5 times the speed of sound,
and is equipped with a lightweight anti-aircraft radar,
and has the ability to fight in the open,
which is actually small but strong.
After the 21st century,
international prices continue to soar.
In the 1990s, the F-16C cost only $20 million.
By 2020, it has soared to $100 million.
Countries with weak economic strength can't afford it,
and can only look for cheap light fighters.
Currently, the international market mainly has
F-C-1 Dragon, which is produced in cooperation with Pakistan,
Indian Light Fighter, and F-A-50.
Among these three cheap fighters,
although F-A-50 is more expensive,
it has the US system.
Of course, F-A-50 has more advantages.
So far,
T-50, F-A-50,
a large number of export to the Philippines,
Thailand, India,
Malaysia,
Egypt,
Colombia,
the total production has broken.
Even Poland, a member state of NATO,
bought a large number of F-A-50s.
48 F-A-50s were purchased in one go.
F-A-50s have become the largest foreign user in a month.
And the follow-up orders are still endless.
Even the US Air Force, which has rejected the T-50A,
sees that Boeing's T-7A production progress is too slow,
and is considering introducing the T-50A in the name of rent,
and returning it after T-7A service.
As I said just now,
F-A-50's predecessor,
T-50 Advanced Sprinter,
is designed from the F-16.
Therefore, its appearance is very similar to the FCK-1,
which is the same model as the T-50.
It used to be called the Uighur.
For the purpose of opening,
the T-50 is mainly developed with high-training aircraft and light attack aircraft,
replacing the A-37 and F-51F.
The IDF is developed from interceptors to air-to-air combat aircraft,
replacing the F-104 and F-51F.
From this point of view, there is not much difference.
But we have to see that
although the basic performance of F-A-50 is not much different from the T-50,
but after further improving the tactical data transmission chain,
the four-seat power station system,
and the ability to put accurate guidance ammunition,
it has already thrown the IDF out of a long distance.
Not to mention the power system.
Compared with the IDF, which has a heart disease,
F-A-50 uses a common electrical F-404 spray fan engine,
with a maximum speed of more than 1.5 mph,
and a range of about 1,851 kilometers.
The whole machine has seven mounting hardpoints,
which is said to further strengthen the fuselage structure of the F-A-50,
so that the effective weight of the mount
can be increased from 10,000 pounds to 12,000 pounds.
The basic armament of the F-A-50
is a three-cylinder 20-kilometer rotary cannon,
using AIM-9L antiaircraft guided missiles,
as an air-to-air combat weapon.
In addition, it can be used to launch traditional bombs,
JDAM and AGM-65 small cattle missiles,
for ground-to-ground attack missions.
Let's take a closer look at the radar.
The F-A-50's radar system uses the Israeli EL-M2032.
The F-A-50 was originally equipped with AN-APG-67V4 radars,
but the Philippine version of the F-A-50
is equipped with the Israeli EL-M2032 multi-mode fire-control radar,
also known as the Maichon-Dupre radar.
This radar is said to be the best traditional mechanical radar in performance.
But whether it is AN-APG-67V4 or EL-M2032,
its air-to-air search distances are about 80 nautical miles,
which is equivalent to the GD-53 radar used by the IDF.
In terms of the combination of core combat, super 4G air-to-air combat
and high-performance radar,
the F-A-50 Block 20 has also been further strengthened.
In September 2022, the U.S. government officially approved
the F-A-50 Block 20 integration plan
developed by Raytheon Technologies
and the Phantom Strike radar.
The Phantom Strike radar developed by Raytheon Technologies
can be compared with the F-16 fighter's latest F-16V APG-83 radar in terms of performance,
but is expected to cost less than half of the latter.
So at least the F-A-50's follow-up improvement is significantly better than the IDF.
In terms of long-range weapons,
because South Korea has not been subject to many restrictions
on the purchase or development of military equipment in Taiwan,
F-A-50, which can be installed by Rokhsid,
can be installed almost all the time,
so the AIM-120 can also be installed on the F-A-50,
but the IDF cannot install the AIM-120 at present.
To make a long story short,
the F-A-50 is simply a missile depot.
Although it is a light fighter,
its maximum payload is nearly 4.5 tons.
It can carry two AIM-9 short-range air-to-air missiles,
six AGM-65 small-caliber air-to-ground missiles,
five CBU-58 rapid-fire missiles,
nine Mk 82,500-pound low-maintenance commercial missiles,
three Mk 831,000-pound low-maintenance commercial missiles,
three Mk 84,200-pound low-maintenance commercial missiles,
or nine Mk 20 ten-eyes rapid-fire missiles,
as well as nine KJ-70 air-to-air missiles,
and radar-reflective interceptors.
Both are not specialized for anti-gravity,
so you can tell the difference just by looking at the interceptor.
The orange part is the IDF,
and the IDF's TC-2 is a semi-buried mount.
The interceptor will be more powerful than the AIM-120
mounted on the wing or below the wing.
In this respect, the two are not divided by weight.
In terms of speed,
the AF-50 is 1.5 mph,
while the IDF is 1.8 mph,
and the IDF is faster.
The climb rate of the AF-50 is 12,070 meters per minute,
while the IDF is 15,240 meters per minute.
Therefore, in general,
in terms of air combat and mobility,
the FA-50 and the IDF are somewhat different.
However, in terms of radar performance,
ground attack, navigation,
and various load-bearing and firepower,
the FA-50 is far superior to the IDF.
Of course, there is a more important point,
that is, the FA-50's sales performance
has far surpassed that of the IDF.
After the second batch of Jin Guohao was discontinued in 1992,
there has been a constant question.
For so many years,
in addition to Jin Guohao's early service,
there have been some rumors that
a small number of countries are willing to purchase it,
but so far no country has issued an order.
Recently, it was also reported that
an election bill to strengthen the IDF fighter and
anti-aircraft missile program has been
unable to meet the air force's combat needs,
which has made the air force very worried about
whether to support the Chinese Academy of Sciences's
subsequent development plan.
It's really a sweat for Jin Guohao.
Viewers, what do you think of the different fates
of the Korean T-50 and the FA-50
and the Taiwan IDF Jin Guohao?
