"Raff was essentially self-taught. However, his early compositions already revealed a great talent. In an effort to become financially independent as quickly as possible, he fell into a composing frenzy and produced like on a conveyor belt, which was not very conducive to his artistic development. On the recommendation of Mendelssohn and Liszt, his first compositions were published by Breitkopf. Franz Liszt brought him to Weimar in 1850. As Liszt's secretary and assistant, he was mainly responsible for the orchestration of Liszt's orchestral works, which did not bring him any laurels, but did give him a lot of experience. It was in Weimar that Raff composed his first symphony. His opera King Alfred was a great success. The symphony Im Walde quickly spread his fame.

Later, differences arose between Liszt and Raff, and the latter resigned his post and moved to Stuttgart. Here he met Hans von Bülow, who was to become his patron and long-time friend. After a position in a publishing house in Hamburg and another collaboration with Franz Liszt in Weimar, he moved to Wiesbaden. He worked here until 1877 and, in addition to his work as a piano teacher and lecturer in harmony, this period is considered to be his most productive as a composer. The increasing success of his works enabled him to work as a freelance composer from the early 1870s.

In 1878 he was appointed the first director of the Hoch Conservatory in Frankfurt am Main, which quickly gained an international reputation thanks to his work. His dearest wish for a secure livelihood was thus fulfilled. For five years he demonstrated his great abilities as a teacher and organiser and was highly regarded as a composer and conservatoire director. His colleagues during this period included Clara Schumann and Julius Stockhausen." Source: radioswissclassic.ch
