Ludwig van Beethoven's 3rd Symphony in E flat major op. 55, known as the "Eroica" (Heroic Symphony), was composed between 1802 and 1803. Today, the work is considered groundbreaking and is one of the composer's most popular and most frequently performed orchestral works.

The premiere took place on 9 June 1804 in a private setting in the Viennese palace of Prince Joseph Lobkowitz, who had acquired the sole performance rights for a few months. This is documented by the fee invoice of some orchestral musicians, in which the participation of a third horn is explicitly noted, as only the Eroica requires.

The first edition (orchestral parts) was published in October 1806 in the Wiener Kunst- und Industrie-Comptoir, announced in the Wiener Zeitung of 19 October 1806, and bears the title "Sinfonia eroica, composta per festeggiare il sovvenire di un grand'uomo" - Heroic Symphony, composed to celebrate the memory of a great man.

If the tradition of Ferdinand Ries is true, who wrote in his memoirs in 1838:

"I was the first to tell him the news that Bonaparte had declared himself Emperor, whereupon he broke into a rage and exclaimed, "So he is no more than a common mortal! Now, too, he will tread under foot all the rights of Man, indulge only his ambition; now he will think himself superior to all men, become a tyrant!" Beethoven went to the table, seized the top of the title-page, tore it in half and threw it on the floor. The page had to be recopied, and it was only now that the symphony received the title Sinfonia eroica."" cannot be said with certainty.

What is certain is that the original document has not survived, only a copy dated August 1804, which has been checked by the composer and is now in the possession of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde. The title page originally read: "Sinfonia grande, intitolata Bonaparte" - Great Symphony, with the title Bonaparte. The last two words were erased by Beethoven, but are still legible.

So it seems that the title was actually changed. But who can say today whether it was really as described above? What is certain is that the "Eroica" really deserves the title "Heroic Symphony".

The video was recorded by Christian Schlegel in Adelboden, Switzerland and edited by Wenjing Ma.
