IDF is also known as F-CK-1 fighter, commonly known as "Jingguo" fighter, in memory of Jiang Jingguo.
The F-CK-1 Ching-KUO (AIDC F-CK-1 CHing-KUO) is a lightweight supersonic multi-role jet fighter designed and developed by the Republic of China with technical assistance from the United States.Under the roc air Force's program, the homemade F-CK-1 fighter, along with mirage 2000-5 purchased from France and F-16A/B purchased from the United States, constitute the mainstay of the ROC air force's air superiority in defense of the Taiwan Strait, among which F-CK-1 is responsible for low and medium air defense and some land attack missions.
In the 1980s, under the direction of Chiang Ching-kuo, then president of the Republic of China, the government of the Republic of China launched "homemade Defense aircraft" with the help of the United States government and technology transfer.The development of Indigenous Defense Fighter, which replaced the aging F-5 Freedom Fighter as the new generation of main aircraft of the ROC Air Force, resulted in the Eagle Project, the largest Indigenous weapon development program in the history of the ROC Air Force.The first IDF prototype left the factory on December 10, 1988, and entered service with the Air Force in 1992.The aircraft's model is F-CK-1, in which "CK" stands for "Jingguo", an abbreviation of "Ching-kuo" in Waitomo pinyin, and was named "Jingguo Fighter" in honor of Chiang Ching-guo.
IDF又稱F-CK-1戰鬥機，俗稱「經國」號戰鬥機，用以紀念蔣經國。
F-CK-1經國戰鬥機（英語：AIDC F-CK-1 Ching-kuo），是中華民國在美國技術協助下設計、開發的一種輕型超音速多用途噴氣戰鬥機，具備視距外作戰能力及冷艙啟動快速等特點；在中華民國空軍的規劃下，自製F-CK-1戰鬥機與向法國采購的幻影2000-5戰鬥機及向美國采購的F-16A/B戰鬥機，構成中華民國國軍防衛臺灣海峽製空權的主力，其中F-CK-1型戰鬥機負責中低空防禦及部分對地攻擊任務。
1980年代，時任中華民國總統蔣經國指示下，中華民國政府在美國政府的幫助及技術移轉下展開「自製防禦戰機」（英語：Indigenous Defense Fighter）的研發，以取代逐漸老化的F-5自由鬥士戰鬥機作為中華民國空軍的新一代主力機，於是產生了中華民國空軍建軍史上最大的自製武器開發計劃——「鷹揚計劃」。1988年12月10日第一架「IDF」原型機出廠，1992年進入空軍服役；該戰機型號為「F-CK-1」，其中「CK」代表「經國」二字威妥瑪拼音「Ching-kuo」的縮寫，並命名為「經國戰機」，以紀念蔣經國。
