Dear all,
Thank you for watching, and I hope you enjoyed my very personal rendition of the beautiful piece Farewell, by the world renowned Brazilian composer and guitarist, Sergio Assad.
This piece was born out of grief and sadness, therefore the intensity of its depth and melodic lyricism. The composer wrote it in 1994, amidst his desperation and sadness caused by his wife's illness and passing. He literally poured his feelings and heart into this one, which was originally written for 2 guitars and later on arranged for solo guitar.
I found it last year, and it came to me at a very special moment, as I was grieving, too, and found refuge in its notes and deep beauty. The video that you will watch was the fruit of that longing, that sadness, that prompted me to this piece when I was dealing with the loss of one of the most important persons in my life: my grandma.
She passed away in December, and I was recording the video in early January, on a sad and cold afternoon in Malibu, CA. The grey atmosphere was perfect, and I believe that recording the video was also a rite of passage, a rite for healing, for grief needs to be felt so that we can accept it, and later move on. It was my way of saying goodbye to that person who was always my hero and my beacon of light, the goodbye that I couldn't give her in person, as I was away in distant lands.
Therefore, this is my gift to her, not only to her but to the world.
As the year ends, and we all engage in reflecting on all that has passed, this song, "Farewell," is a heartfelt soundtrack for that reflection. It is a symbolic goodbye to both loved ones and the year's experiences. Find solace and connection in its melodies, and be ready to let go. Here's to embracing new beginnings
Best,
Laura
