In October 2003, I was driving at night in Nogales, Mexico. I stopped at a convenience store to get a drink and a snack.
When I opened my car door, I heard a kitten wailing non-stop. I saw this tiny little kitten, she sat by the edge of my open door, looked up at me and continued wailing.

I picked her up - she was so tiny! No more than a pound, about 6 months old I think. I petted her for a while - she stopped wailing and began to purr.
Then she looked directly at me with a penetrating gaze, with sapphire blue eyes staring into mine … I could see into her soul and her intelligence.
She looked so healthy that I thought she must belong to someone nearby, so I set her back on the ground then went into the store. When I came out she was sitting right next to my car door. I got in, picked her up and gave her some more petting then set her down on the ground again.
As soon as I let go of her she leapt onto my lap, put her front paws on my chest and started nuzzling my face with her nose while purring loudly. My heart melted … after a moment of bliss, I said out loud ‘OK you’ve got my heart … now - what am I going to do with you?’

I didn’t know if there were laws regarding taking animals across the border back into the US, but I had to five it a try. I put her on the seat next to me and drove to the border, a few blocks away.
I stopped at the guard station and rolled down my window to talk with him. She jumped out, freaked out from the car motion.
The guard picked her up, smiled and said ‘pretty kitty!’ and handed her to me, no questions asked, checked my ID then waved me across the border.

As I drove, she was crying and wandering around the car. About 15 minutes though, she stopped, curled up on my lap and lay there, looking up at me once in a while.
