
A 90 Year Old Grandma with a Knack for Painting on Anything
Wang Chen Min-chu (王陳明珠) used to be an elementary school teacher in Tainan County in southern Taiwan. After moving to Taipei, she once ran a beauty salon for about 10 years in the 1970s. She was one of the first hairdressers who introduced Audrey Hepburn’s mushroom-shaped hairstyle to Taiwan.
In 1987, she started to explore her hobby of painting to express the strong emotions and feelings that were deep in her heart and mind. She often painted on used kitchenware, and her works amazed many of her relatives and friends.
Wang Chen Min-chu is still enthusiastic about learning different painting techniques. She is currently working on her self-portrait, and she said that it would be something memorable for her family. She is holding her first personal painting exhibition at a gallery in Taipei, Taiwan, for two months. Her masterpiece, "The Homeland at Twilight" (黃昏的故鄉), has especially intrigued many viewers.
It depicts the scenarios of expats who are nostalgic for the good old days in their homeland from afar. She said painting has truly enriched her life, and she will continue to create more works. She emphasized that all the proceeds from selling her paintings will be donated to charities. Wang Chen Min-chu is a vivid example of lifelong learning and a positive attitude toward life. Her great compassion will surely be remembered by many people.
