When Hollywood gathers for the 96th Academy Awards, the blockbuster biopic "Oppenheimer" is widely expected to overpower all competition - including its release-date companion, "Barbie" - at an election-year Oscars that could turn into a coronation for Christopher Nolan
We are just hours away from one of the most anticipated
nights in Hollywood, the Oscars.
The 96th Academy Awards will honor the biggest and brightest
stars on the big screen, Tim Pulliam,
outside the Dolby Theater this morning.
And Tim, my friend, you have outdone yourself.
Look at you this Sunday morning.
I'll tell you, Mark, Irene, I had to jazz it up.
It's the Oscars, and it is my first time.
So I'm very excited.
You really can feel the energy here.
The crews have been cleaning this carpet all morning.
You can see that Oscar is still covered in plastic.
But they're going to take that off very soon.
The stars are going to be walking down
the red carpet to my left, and then
they'll make their way into the Dolby Theater behind me.
We are just literally waiting for them to arrive.
You are the man who gave them the power
to destroy themselves.
From Oppenheimer.
You guys ever think about dying?
To Barbie.
Please send help.
There's murder on the home stage.
To killers of the flower moon.
Tonight, these blockbuster films among the 10
Best Picture nominees battling for the Oscars gold.
We still have what I consider, personally,
maybe the best lineup of Best Picture nominees
in over 25 years.
And for Best Actress, the race is fierce.
Annette Bening, Carey Mulligan, Emma Stone, Lily Gladstone,
and Sandra Hooler.
It's really, really exciting.
At the same time, I am with such beautiful people
that it feels really natural.
Seeing this moment, leading actress, it's a big deal.
It's long overdue, but it's very welcome.
And who will win for Best Actor?
Will it be two-time Oscar nominee, Paul Giamatti?
I can tell by your faces that many of you are shocked.
12-time Oscar nominee, Bradley Cooper.
Our first-time nominees, Colman Domingo.
You know what he saw?
A star.
Cillian Murphy.
Voters drops below one vote.
If you hit that button, you abort.
Understood?
Or Jeffrey Wright.
Why am I the last to know?
Best Actor, I think from this position,
looks like a two-person race at this point.
You know, I think it's sort of between Cillian
Murphy for Oppenheimer and Paul Giamatti for the holdover.
Giamatti's a longtime Academy favorite.
What was I made for?
And previous Oscar winners, Billie Eilish
and Phineas O'Connell's What Was I Made For
is nominated for Best Original Song.
It's inside this huge movie that
has so many things going on, and yet it's so intimate.
It's so close.
I think that performance will be a showstopper,
and I can't wait to see it.
But no matter who wins or loses, there
should be plenty of laughs with host Jimmy Kimmel.
I wonder how many people would notice if I just
did the same jokes I did last year.
Oscar producers tapping the comedian
to emcee Hollywood's biggest night of fourth time.
And Mark, Irene, we talked about diversity being up 4%
compared to last year.
And that is likely due to the Academy's new representation
and inclusion standards.
I did some reading.
So for example, the nominees for Best Film
had to prove that their staff was actually
diverse in front of the camera and behind the scenes.
In Hollywood, Tim Pulliam, ABC 7 Eyewitness News.
We certainly were shocked a moment ago
to learn and be reminded that Bradley Cooper, 12th
nomination, which is just incredible.
Of course, it's a who's who out there
in a matter of hours on the red carpet.
Besides the nominees, any insight
on who we may see walking down the red carpet?
Who are we expecting?
Oh, yeah, Mark.
It is a long list.
We're talking about Steven Spielberg, Melissa McCarthy,
Cynthia Erivo, and Zendaya.
All of them are presenters tonight.
Many of them have been rehearsing since yesterday
and earlier in the week.
And they are expected to walk down
the carpet with the nominees.
Doors open around noon our time.
Yeah, it's just a matter of hours
before we see all those stars come down.
All right, Tim, thank you so much.
And again, you look really great this morning on the red carpet.
10 out of 10.
