"The word aria in the title has the same meaning an in keyboard works by Pachelbel and other seventeenth-century composers, also used by Bach much later in the aria of the Goldberg Variations: a short binary form that serves as the basis of variations, mostly composed of lively figuration. Both title and content show parallels with an Aria witch variation in the same key, usually attributes to Johann Christoph Bach. Both works use full-voiced settings at beginning and end, triplet variations in the body of the work an a penultimate variation consisting of sixteenths for both hands."
