"The theme is probably the composer’s; the adventurous harmony and unusual melodic leaps of BWV989 are unlikely to have occurred in a popular tune. But this is not certain, and the work raises other puzzles as well. The title given in the BG, Aria variata alla maniera italiana, means „song varied in the Italian style“. But this reading occurs only in a late, derivative source and although the violinistic nature of some variations (2, 8) suggests Corelly, the more old-fashioned feature are distiingliy German."
