Hey, good morning, I don't know if you remember this ficus.
This is a ficus of my friends.
They gave it to me to take care of it.
They want it to start to branch out,
because so far it is one bud.
It stood with me through the whole winter
and started to wake up in the spring.
He started to release new leaves,
so this is the right time to work with him a little
to start to branch out.
And we have three ways for that.
I will present you the methods that worked
in the case of the ficus
that I saved from the next staircase.
I hope you remember his story.
Method 1
On the main stalk and side branches
in the places where the leaves grow
or the remaining spruces,
i.e. in the so-called nodes,
there are small, slanted buds,
i.e. buds of new leaves and branches.
We can stimulate growth
by cutting the stalk just above them.
We make the incision with a clean tool,
preferably a knife.
We make the incision
about 1 cm above the bud.
We make the incision at an angle
until we feel a slight resistance.
We cut about 1 mm
deep into the stalk
until we notice that the plant
starts to release juices.
Watch out for the ficus juice
because the latex contained in it can be sensitive.
We can make a maximum of 2-3 incisions
on one plant.
When the plant starts to branch out
under the incision,
it starts to produce leaves,
then we can make more incisions
on the remaining branches.
The second way is to remove the growth stalk,
i.e. the top of the plant.
When our ficus has grown
to a height that satisfies us,
then we can tear off, cut off the top.
Removing the top of the growth
should stimulate the plant to branch out.
I don't do it yet
because we will now move on to the third method.
The third method is simply
shortening the branch.
We can cut 5, 10, 15
and so many centimeters
if we want to shorten the plant.
When we cut the tops,
it is worth taking such a fragment
that we will be able to root.
The cut branch that we want to root
should be at least 8-10 cm long.
Because this ficus has a damaged leaf,
I will cut off such a fragment of the top
to cut with this leaf.
I tear off the lower leaves
I leave 2-3.
I can put the picked seedling
directly into the water,
to the other ficuses
that I am currently rooting,
put directly into the substrate
which consists of a mixture of peat and perlite.
The substrate should be still slightly moist.
It is worth covering the seedling
with a foil bag or a glass dish
and placing it in a clear, visible place.
We can safely place it on the east,
south and west parapet.
We can also root the seedling
in a wet peat moss.
I use this method.
I drain the previously soaked peat moss,
wrap the seedling,
wrap it with a stretch foil
and put it in a jar.
When we root in a peat moss,
we cannot allow it to dry completely.
Therefore, I will pour some water
about 1 cm into the dish.
I will place the seedling in a clear, visible place
with a diluted light.
When I notice that the moss has dried from the top,
I will moisten it with a cloth
or a sprayer.
I will present the processes of rooting
and branching ficuses in vlog videos.
Thank you for watching!
