There have long been myths surrounding this place.
The place used to be called "montis richerii" or "Roggeresberch". A fairy queen is said to have lived in her castle nearby.
Lütolds von Rümligen (1015-1048) is said to have given the two monks Cono and St Ulrich von Zell money to build the first rooms for a monastery around 1072. The foundation stone for a monastery was allegedly laid on the old Celtic power place in order to lead the population to the new faith.
The construction of the Romanesque church was not completed until 1175, a total of 103 years, as some of the locals were reluctant to help build the monastery. Many still believed in ancient Celtic traditions and natural deities.
Thus, one of the most important monastery complexes in Switzerland was built on the site that had served as a refuge for the Celts.
After 1175, the Cluniac order (a monastic reform movement from Cluny in Burgundy) colonised the monastery. The monks were independent of secular lords and directly subordinate to the Pope. Choral singing and prayer were at the centre of their faith. But compassion, hospitality, caring for the poor and nursing the sick were also part of the monks' Christian ideals.
However, not all of them kept their sacred vow of abstinence and so an old legend tells of the monks who lived here. The ghost of a monk is said to sit on an old wooden bench in front of the ruins from time to time. He carries his head under his arm and atones for his brothers. They are said to have sneaked into the Gürbetal valley through an underground passage. Legend has it that they celebrated extravagant feasts there. Now, it seems, they are still doing penance for breaking their sacred vows.
The view from the garden of the Rüeggisberg monastery ruins was filmed by Simone Schlegel. The video was edited by Wenjing Ma.
