When Mendelssohn was eight years old, his parents arranged for him to have a music teacher: Carl Friedrich Zelter. Zelter taught Mendelssohn composition and music theory. He was always described as "crude", "coarse" and conservative. However, he always remained neutral in his lessons. He was so impressed by Felix that he wrote letters to Goethe about him and eventually took him on a trip to Weimar to meet Goethe in 1820. In one of Zelter's letters to Goethe, he mentioned that it was extremely rare for a Jew to make music professionally, but this did not change his opinion of Mendelssohn as a student, but encouraged him to introduce Mendelssohn to the world because he was so impressive. When Felix travelled to Weimar, he played the piano for Goethe for two hours, performing works by composers such as Bach, improvisations and some of his own compositions. After Goethe had seen with his own eyes what Zelter was talking about, he kept Felix there for sixteen days to work with him, and Felix made further trips to Goethe in his youth accompanied by Zelter[2] Overall, the relationship between Mendelssohn and Zelter was very strong due to the influence Zelter had on him, and Mendelssohn later composed his own first works. For example, Mendelssohn dedicated the Piano Quartet No. 2 in F minor to Zelter.
