On my mission to document all of the Texas State Parks I found myself driving a very twisty and winding hill country roads in my bog ole motor home while towing my F150 pick up. Just know if you are planning on visiting Old Tunnel State Park I do not recommend traveling those winding hill country roads with your wife in your motor home while you are towing your pick up.
Old Tunnel State Park is day use only with only a handful of picnic tables and only one short hiking trail. What really makes Old Tunnel State Park so interesting and unique are the bats, so very many bats!
The city of Fredericksburg Texas built a railway to improve commerce, that required digging a tunnel, after the railroad was shut down in the 1940s the bats moved in. The state of Texas took over the property to protect the bat colony and created a very unique place for the public to view the nightly feeding departure.
Join me as I explore the very unique Old Tunnel State Park.
