所以從1942年末開始，盟軍轉用大中型轟炸機執行反潛任務。主要就是美式的B-24“解放者”和英國的“桑德蘭”轟炸機。這樣既能確保空中訓練力量有較長航程，又能以足夠強大的武裝去摧毀更多目標。這樣的決策在起始階段似乎並不出彩，卻在後來的戰爭進程中發揮了巨大作用。尤其是B-24“解放者”轟炸機，依靠北美工廠的巨大產能而不斷輸入前線。最終不僅爲美軍所喜愛，也大量提供給英國皇家空軍使用。
