"Muzio Clementi, one of the greatest and epoch-making virtuosos and composers of the pianoforte, the founder of modern piano playing, was born in Rome in 1752 and was the son of a very skilful silver worker who lived there. Clementi's early musical talent was carefully nurtured by his father, who was very fond of the art of music. The Kapellmeister Buroni, one of his relatives, was Clementi's first teacher, who gave the talented boy to the organist Cordicelli in 1759 so that he could make thorough basso continuo studies. Two years later, Clementi was already so advanced that he was able to beat several applicants and take up an organist's post. He continued to pursue his musical studies with great enthusiasm, and Cerpini had to teach him counterpoint and strict composition, while Santarelli taught him singing. Barely 14 years old, Clementi had already composed numerous works in the bound style, one of which was performed in public and astonished the artistic world."
