Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 23 in F minor is characterised by volatile mood shifts, turbulent drama and revolutionary fervour.
Completed around 1805, it dates from the composer’s now-famous “heroic” middle period. Beethoven did not give it the apt and familiar nickname, 'Appassionata'. This was added in 1838, when the German publisher Cranz created a piano duet version. The pianist Carl Czerny, who was Beethoven's student, described this sonata as “the most perfect execution of a mighty and colossal plan”.
The video was captured in the Gantrisch region by Christian Schlegel and edited by Wenjing Ma.
