Considering how extraordinarily prolific his career as a composer was, it is hard to fathom how Franz Schubert's career lasted only a decade. It is all the more astonishing, then, that his musical language evolved so immensely, guided by harmonic and structural explorations that would have continued well into the nineteenth century were it not for his untimely death at the age of thirty-one. Composed in March 1817 when Schubert was twenty years old, the Sonata in A Minor D 537 was his first successful work in the genre. It followed a number of attempts at multi-movement compositions, which often lacked a closing rondo, and standalone movements in sonata or A-B-A form, which are now considered to be abandoned projects. The opening movement takes an innovative approach to key relations, featuring a second theme in F major and a recapitulation in D minor. The second movement, 'Allegretto quasi andantino', also features a variety of modulations and sudden changes to relatively remote keys. The closing rondo is characterised by frequent interruptions that could be interpreted as a series of unanswered questions. The sonata ends on an optimistic note in the key of A major. The work remained unpublished until 1852.
This video was shot in the Ueschinen Valley from the narrow mountain gravel road. There was a small lay-by, and I parked our car there. While my husband climbed down the steep slope to the "mini" stream (and took much nicer video footage), I had the pleasure of filming it with a Fujinon 70-300mm telephoto lens. It's not the best angle for the pretty mini waterfalls, but it's definitely the safest without having to climb.
The "mini" stream was filmed by Simone Schlegel and the video was edited by Wenjing Ma.
