Historically, 北 meant back. When two people stand back to back, it looks like 北. After the word began to mean north, people needed another word to refer to back. So they came up with the word 北 by adding 月 at the bottom. Now you might be wondering why adding 月? Why not something else? Doesn't 月 refer to the moon? Yes, you are right.
