In fact, as early as April 1916, the Albatross Aircraft Works had built a rugged prototype of a light aircraft.The biggest characteristic of this machine is not the use of conventional fuselage skin, but completely made of wood plywood fuselage.There are many advantages to this: first, it significantly increases the strength of the airframe, which is survivable after being shot;Secondly, the total weight of wood structure is lighter than skin structure;Third, it is also cheaper to build.
On 6 June 1916, a PROTOTYPE D. I was flown for evaluation at the Adlershof Laboratory and underwent a series of tests including "static load".Satisfied with the test results, the German army placed an order for 100 albatross D. I fighters with Albatross in July of the same year.

其實早在1916年4月，信天翁飛機制造廠就已經制造了一架堅固的輕型飛機原型。該機最大的特點就是沒有采用常規的機身蒙皮，而是完全由木夾板拼制而成的機身。這樣做的好處有很多：首先，它顯著提升了機身強度，機身在中彈後的生存性良好；其次，木結構的總重量輕於蒙皮結構；第三，其造價也更爲低廉。
1916年6月6日，一架D.Ⅰ型原型機在阿德勒肖夫實驗場飛行評估，並進行了包括“靜載荷”等一系列測試。這次的測試結果讓德國軍方很滿意，於是同年7月，德軍就和信天翁飛機制造廠簽下100架信天翁D.Ⅰ戰機的訂單。
“信天翁”戰機的造型完全不同於其他軍機，它是一種很獨特的“紡錘體流線”型外觀，這種漂亮的造型此前已經在“信天翁”C系列偵察機上得到了成功運用，現在則成爲“信天翁”戰鬥機的鮮明外形特徵。因爲該系列戰鬥機所具有的流暢而優雅的外觀，當時被人們形象地稱爲：野獸中的美女。
