M-84主戰坦克曾以M-84AB爲代號出口科威特，並參加海灣戰爭。南斯拉夫解體後，繼承該型坦克的克羅地亞和塞爾維亞均沒有停止對M-84主戰坦克的改進，先後推出一系列改進型。塞爾維亞曾使用俄羅斯提供的部件研製出改進型M-84AS主戰坦克，但由於俄羅斯提供的組件數量不多，最終僅有少數M-84升級爲M-84AS。
