Influenced by this, the French navy put forward a plan for a light nuclear power aircraft carrier of 20,000 tons named PA-75 in 1975. However, this plan was strongly criticized by the senior people of the French navy who advocated the development of traditional aircraft carriers with large decks.After many negotiations and modifications, France's new generation of nuclear aircraft carriers have finally adopted the traditional takeoff and landing design.So in 1980, the French Navy formalized its policy of building nuclear-powered aircraft carriers.The new nuclear-powered aircraft carrier has a displacement of nearly 40,000 tons at full load, almost the maximum the French navy can afford.
衆所周知，在歐洲逐漸一體化走向歐盟的發展道路之後，英、法、德三大強國成了歐洲三巨頭。可隨着國際形勢的發展，比國際關係比不過英國，比經濟實力又不如德國。面對這樣的情況，法國意識到自己必須要自尋出路，獨立自主。尤其是在軍事領域，法國的航空母艦發展道路可謂是獨樹一幟，它一直按照自己的軍事思想、對航母的認識、對遠洋海軍的認識來建造屬於自己的航空母艦。
那麼今天，我們來了解一下法國的第一艘核動力航空母艦，也是世界上唯一一艘非美國海軍隸下的核動力航空母艦—戴高樂號航空母艦。
戴高樂號航空母艦是法國史上擁有的第十艘航空母艦，其命名源自於法國著名的軍事將領與政治家夏爾.戴高樂。從20世紀70年代末期開始，法國海軍便着手規劃一種新型核動力航空母艦，以此來接替從1963年服役的兩艘克萊蒙梭級航空母艦，計劃名稱爲PAN（法語“核動力航空母艦”的縮寫）。而同時期的英國正在規劃、建造無敵級航空母艦，受此影響，法國海軍在1975年提出一個名爲PA-75的2萬噸級輕型核動力航空母艦方案，但此方案一提出便遭到主張發展大甲板傳統起降航空母艦的法國海軍高層人士猛烈批評；經過多次協商和修改後，法國新一代核航空母艦最終還是採用傳統起降設計。於是在1980年 ，法國海軍正式確立建造核動力航空母艦的政策。而這種新型核子動力航空母艦滿載排水量近四萬噸，幾乎是法國海軍所能負擔的最大極限。
