梅卡瓦主戰坦克也是世界上最先進的主戰坦克之一，梅卡瓦主戰坦克由以色列於上世紀七十年代後期研發，共衍生出Mk14種不同型號。在服役期間，該坦克曾被以色列作爲主力裝備而頻繁參與對外作戰，可謂久經沙場。那麼今天我們就來聊聊以色列的梅卡瓦主戰坦克，看看它的能力究竟如何，使的以色列寧可捨棄M1系列主戰坦克，也要堅定的選擇它呢？
自上世紀50年代開始，以色列先後曾向法國、英國、德國提出購買坦克的請求，然而阿拉伯世界國家不斷地向他們施壓，導致各國都無法與以色列進行坦克交易。最終，以色列只得到了美國提供的M48中型坦和M60、M60A1主戰坦克。面對這樣的形勢，以色列決定利用最少的外援，自行研製出一種屬於自己的新型主戰坦克。以色列認爲，1967年的中東戰爭證明“機動防護”的意義不大，在吸取實戰經驗的基礎上，以軍確立了“以防護爲基礎、保護乘員爲中心”的設計理念。所以在研製新型主戰坦克的初期便確定坦克的三大性能次序是防護、火力和機動性。也正是遵循“防護第一，攻擊第二”的理念，1978年10月第1輛梅卡瓦主戰坦克正式交付以色列部隊。在1982年夏季的黎巴嫩戰爭中第一次使用，首次參戰的梅卡瓦坦克即創下以微小的代價擊毀敘利亞陸軍蘇制T-54/55坦克19輛的戰績，從而一戰成名。
